Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. There are more vendors in the LMS space under 10K then in the past – thus meeting the markets’ needs yet the authoring tool space is seeing a spike in prices. Rapid Intake – Talk about price increase. Fear of the Mobile Bogeyman aka HTML5.

A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. I’m always amazed at some of the names vendors come up with for authoring tools. Studio has always been known for the PowerPoint to Flash approach, but it also includes audio narration, TOC (yeah!)

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power. They output only to HTML5.

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it. Supports Flash and HTML5.

Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. When you see many of these awards from organizations – the general mass of them (but not all of them) require the vendor/company to submit an application for whatever category or categories. There is never any pay for play here – even my vendor clients are aware that they may not win best of the best. It doesn’t output to HTML5, though. #8

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. Rapid Intake: Unison. You get the Flash code – YES – you get the code, which you can do whatever you want with it. Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Supports HD h.264 codec, which the iPad supports, and a few browsers for HTML5.

One of the most useful aspects of DevLearn is the Vendor Expo. Essentially it is a very friendly user interface that sits on top of Flash AS3 and allows a non-programmer to develop complex interactions using a “wire” metaphor to link object properties. They also tell us they will have export to HTML5 by Spring next year. This looks to be a significant advance in functionality for the rapid learning tool.

3, Interactions/Animations/Games I don’t want to get into the Flash debate here but let’s face it; the.swf output file is here to stay for a long time. You can sit around and wait for who wins the HTML5 argument or you can learn Flash. Other than HTML, at a minimum I recommend learning XML, basic JavaScript (Web) and basic ActionScript (Flash). Some are referred to as “Rapid” where others are more complex.
