E-learning Development: Selecting the Right Audio, Video, and Image Format

CommLab India

When developing an eLearning course using rapid authoring tools, you should know which format is supported by the tool to import audio files, videos, and images. If the tool does not support the image, video, or audio format you want to import, you will have to waste time converting them into the required format. So to get a clear picture, let’s see the various formats supported by Adobe Captivate 9, Articulate Storyline, and Lectora 16.

The supported image formats are GIF, JEPG, PNG. We can insert videos in all three tools and also add streaming videos.Supported formats are MP4, FlV and AVI. Supported formats are MP3 and WAVE. There is a possibility to download supporting documents from within the eLearning module (PDF, PPT, MS Word, EXE, ZIP, PNG, JPG, etc.). Selecting the right authoring tool for rapid eLearning projects is a process riddled with uncertainty.

A Way With The Fairies

Learnnovators

As you can see via my screenshot, Aurasma supports the binary transparency of PNG files; with the background of the fairy image invisible, the real background shines through. The app also supports the partial transparency of PNG files; if I were to make the fairy 50% transparent, the real background would be partially visible through her. My understanding is that MP4 format does not support transparency, and while FLV does, it won’t run on the iPad.

You can also save the file in the right file format. JPEG, GIF, and PNG are three of the best formats for e-learning. You can use PNG and GIF for images, graphs, charts, and diagrams, as well as small images with text, buttons, icons, and logos. PNG has the advantage of a smaller file size; GIF has the advantage of also working for simple animations. MP3 is a common format that provides a good level of compression without sacrificing quality.
