So, whilst I may be a little late, I keep being reminded that there are many, many people who are a whole lot less aware of blogs, social networks, wikis, microblogging and so on than I am. As I've used each of these I've been struck by how easily this format (social sites) could be used as a platform for business learning.

If my printer jams, I Google to find the right answers on support forums and always succeed. Some people think that you can find information online, but not knowledge. Knowledge resides mainly in our heads. This is the typical view of knowledge management specialists. The influence of the Internet is huge.

At work we do use social tools such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger and YouTube for learning purposes. When I ask about social learning in the work place, I normally get blank stares from potential clients, “Do you mean I should allow my employees play on Facebook at work?” Industry forums are a great way to share information.
