Yes there are vendors doing some new stuff, okay many, but a few items are not new, rather they have been around for a long time. SaaS boost – Finally more vendors are on the appropriate path for their consumers; but the big folks are not – why? Mobile Friendly – It has taken a bit of time, but go anywhere and you will see “Responsive” and “HTML5″ xAPI – Another why wasn’t this done a year ago for many vendors?

Because then, at least in my ideal world, we’d always get the chance to try before we buy and make vendors support before they abort. And with xAPI courseware coming soon to a training system near you, I’d bet it’s about to get even more confusing before it gets simpler. Hint: Google’s recent Chrome 80 update may have broken some SCORM courseware by capping the amount of data that can be passed back to the LMS, and ignoring everything that’s too big.

Among the more than 700 vendors participating in today’s LMS marketplace, we continue to see a wave of learning solutions designed to solve “niche” business challenges. Despite competitive pressure to keep price points lower, we expect licensing levels to continue drifting upwards, as vendors attempt to demonstrate value-add that differentiates their offerings. Video-centered training is going mainstream and every vendor seems to be pushing new boundaries.

Expect to see an increase and focus on “skills”, whether it is skill-building, retaining skills or expanding someone’s skill set; vendors who really push this route, should include a KRT (knowledge reinforcement tool), however what I am seeing is that this secondary function will be slow. This year’s top KRT is Minds-I , which is available for DL in the iTunes and Google Play store. I don’t blame them, as xAPI is proof.

In an industry filled with so many eLearning vendors, it can be tricky to find the best deal. Ask the LMS vendor to offer a free trial so that you can test out the features. Nowadays, people expect software to work like Facebook, video’s to work like YouTube and the search to work like Google. Does it work intuitively, or will you need to spend a lot of time reading through manuals or emailing the vendor to perform even basic functions?
