IBM has long been my model of getting this one right. Even at IBM, and I’m several years out of date so this could have changed, Blue Pages wasn’t flawless. In early 1999, I told Cisco’s eLearning group that IM was going to become a powerful learning support tool. IM was kid stuff. Yet three or four years later, IM was de rigeur at Cisco and it helped knit the organization together as it mushroomed in size.

A recent CNET article noted that the typical office worker is interrupted every three minutes by an e-mail, IM, phone call, etc. Dan Russell, a researcher at IBM's Almaden Research Center, turns off the instant notification of e-mail and only looks at e-mail 2X a day and has cut the time he spends with e-mail in half. IBM also is looking at solutions to manage scheduling for the next version of Lotus Workplace, part of IBM's collection of software that rivals Office.

Im not sure I buy how much real impact any of this will have on bottom line measures. Out of both of these comments - Im coming to realize that we have to shift our mindset about measurement. Im not trying to be flip. IBM I only briefly mentioned how other organizations are adopting these tools in a big way - The Wall Street Journal - June 18 2007 - social networking at IBM 26,000 registered blogs. Ranking, tagging, top stories Tags link back to the tagger's BluePages profile IBM owns more than 50 islands in Second Life. So, yes, you have to set up policies and alert people just like you do around any form of electronic communication (email, IM).
