May Edition: E-Learning News and Notes

eLearning 24-7

In this month’s issue, my tribute is to the 80′s a time where the Net wasn’t around, ILT was the dominant force, CBT was up and coming and WBT was just a dream. The partner approach works this way: vendor A integrates Vendor B’s solution into their product. Vendor B can still sell their product as a stand alone or however this wish to do it and can still sell it/integrate or use an interface into additional vendor’s solutions.

TechKnowledge 2012 – Post Assessment

Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Trainers handed the task of building courses and incorporate the builds as an extension of ILT – i.e. linear. 43 Vendors do not have one.

Product Review: BlueVolt

eLearning 24-7

Many people today prefer 3rd party authoring tools and in fact, I recommend that route rather then using a vendor’s built in authoring tool. Featured Items- this can be WBT, seminars – online or offline (ILT), resources, videos, etc. Under course is a PPT 2010 QRC, yet under the categories section, you see “downloadable reference” Guess what? At one time BlueVolt was just a spark, a system among many other systems in the market.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools 2010 – Innovators, Winners and Updated Trends

eLearning 24-7

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. LMS, web, CD, etc., Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. iTunes, iTunes University, Facebook, MySpace, CD, web server & more. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. can capture video from web cam. Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature.

EdCast vs Degreed vs Fuse – The Analysis

eLearning 24-7

How do you explain why these three vendors were selected, how the process for analysis was conducted, and what are the results? Why these three vendors? From the vendors themselves and even in conducting my own research into vendor comparisons. This is for virtual ILT.

UpSkilling – Change the Mindset

eLearning 24-7

Let’s look into our crystal ball of the past and remember: Physical ILT – in your conference room, in a training classroom, at a hotel, at a trade show. Teaching your employees, Powerpoint – or how to create a deck in PPT, is the past, the new reality – teach them how to shoot video and utilize it in an effective means for delivering knowledge, insight and communication. . Web conferencing is the rage. But virtual ILT only works to a point.

ATD2015 Conference Post – Review

eLearning 24-7

That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . I just can’t understand the “bricks and mortar” approach so many e-learning vendors use, unreal.

Don’t Just Transfer Classroom Training to E-learning – Transform!

CommLab India

Can you deliver good online training by publishing PowerPoint presentations used in classrooms, as they are, to the web? Remote vendors? And for remote vendors, virtual classrooms can be the best way, as it becomes difficult for them to communicate their queries with self-paced courses. When you move your instructor-led training (ILT) programs online, you need to come up with the right e-learning design strategy to present the subject matter effectively.

Build Gr8 Micro-Learning Course

eLearning 24-7

One well-known vendor told me they want people who are brand new to online learning course building, or if you think of a triangle, the bottom of that pyramid. People coming from ILT who have never built an e-learning course. Usually I find the PPT driven approach, due to it. I want to scream to every rapid course authoring tool vendor who does NOT have a “how to” create online learning course eBook or guide. Which in this case, are the majority of vendors.

Wake UP CLO’s – Change Now

eLearning 24-7

Dump ILT and paper. Ask and Expert/Coaching/Mentoring – Hot new item is the ability for the learner to record themselves via a web cam or mobile device, upload and then the “coach” can review the video in the system and provide comments. Webinars – Web conferencing. Video – A couple of vendors are adding video editing capability. I should add that he kept all his training notes, ILT sessions, training records, etc.in

What if….? (E-Learning)

eLearning 24-7

What really bothers me more so, is when certain learning system vendors tell me they do not offer social or NexGen functionality because their clients either do not want it or because of security concerns by the client. If I have a company laptop or tablet, and I can’t access certain web sites, but I have my own tablet or smartphone (highly likely you have both), that blocking goes bye-bye. But there are vendors who do. I’m a huge fan of history.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

Do you work for eLearning development houses (vendors) or do you work within corporate training departments? Then all of the technical work is done by me; putting content into web pages and Blackboard, creating Captivate as needed, etc. No needs assessment, no functional spec, no design -- just get that ppt deck going and slap some e-learning together. Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff.
