Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Half of Companies Blocking Facebook

Learning Visions

Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Half of Companies Blocking Facebook Christy Tucker has been musing on Social Networking as LMS: Problems and Opportunities. One real problem is corporate fear of social networking tools. Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.

Standards and success

What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission. What’s been a barrier are inconsistent implementations of web standards, like Microsoft’s non-standard versions of HTML for browsers and Java. Microsoft’s done well for itself with the Office suite of applications, and by opening up the XML version, they’re benefiting while not doing harm.

Hodgepodge of social media components – albeit the extensive and main one – social networking with a FB, Linkedin components in there, and of course a blog – thankfully no pure micro-blog like thing nor wiki (A congrats on that one, btw). Testing worked well on all well known browsers: Latest version of Chrome, Firefox 5, IE 9 and latest version of Safari (did not test with Opera, Avant or a few others).
