Reaction to IMS Learning Impact 2012 Conference

We may have all been drinking the same cool-aid, but at the IMS Global Learning Consortium Learning Impact Conference in Toronto, there was a meeting of the minds. The IMS is at the cutting edge of web 2.0 With the ability to easily create learning applications that seamlessly mash-up the best content, and with the tools available, it is no wonder that some innovative vendors have already seized on this new opportunity.

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors). Custom domains – rather than have, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you and remove the vendor name. SCORM/AICC/PENS/IMS.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. One vendor focuses only on Blackberry (not just Playbook but their smartphone like product). Vendor adoption is slow.

The ongoing work of learning standards

And then the IMS (an initiative of Educause before being spun out as an independent effort) started creating standards, as did the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the major body in the US responsible for computing standards. The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism.

IMS Caliper: Caliper is the latest standard from IMS. To understand the difference between the two standards, it’s important to note that IMS and Caliper are driven by higher ed and thus of particular interest to the Educause crowd. IMS’s best known standard, LTI, allows textbook companies to package online course content and ship it with their textbooks, regardless of the implementing university’s LMS.

Why LTI standards support integration is crucial for eBooks and LMS?

Kitaboo on EdTech

On the other hand, Learning Tools Interoperability, or LTI, allows ebooks from different vendors to be launched from a tool from within the LMS. Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is an open standard created by IMS Global Learning Consortium.

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability): One of the Features of a Good LMS

Learning Tools Interoperability is a specification that was developed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. The whitepaper Learning Tools Interoperability said, “Previously, to connect a custom or vendor-provided learning tool with a campus platform such as the LMS, a university IT department either had to assign a developer or hire a specialist to integrate the application with the platform.

Is the cloud hastening the demise of the LMS?

The IMS Global Learning Consortium has announced the release latest version of the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability Specification – Version 1.1. This specification provides a way for courses running in IMS-conformant Learning Management systems to securely access remote content, tools and services, and receive back user’s results. Perhaps the unintended consequence of the IMS LTI 1.1 LEARNING REACHES TO THE CLOUD.

How We Use Social Media for Informal Learning

Bottom-Line Performance

Vendors talk about social learning like its something revolutionary, but I’m here to tell you its not. The possible reasons are many: It seems like more work: We spend enough time sending emails, meeting, IM’ing and (imagine this) actually working as it is. Informal learning is an everyday thing. Social media tools are just another platform we use to learn from each-other and find information serendipitously.

Would IM bundle virtual classrooms. Will content vendors merge with other content, or with tools? There are a lot of e-learning things. LMSs, LCMSs, Virtual Classroom Tools. Online courses on Windows and biology 101 and ethics. The question used to be, what would be bundled? Would EPSs bundle LMSs? Then the question is, what will be merged/acquired. AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

In the late 1990s, each learning management system had its own proprietary content format, which encouraged vendor lock-in. You had to use that vendor’s tools to create e-Learning that worked with that LMS, or your content wouldn’t play. Excellence in Content recognizes vendors that have created superior customized and/or off-the-shelf learning content.
