by Megan Torrance In my previous xAPI article I pointed to the emergence of "geek-free tools and platforms" as the hallmark that xAPI is beginning to achieve main-stream status. It's a progression of the industry toward more, toward faster, and toward better. In the 1960s, Dr. Bruce Tuckman proposed a team development model that lends some structure to the conversation about xAPI. eLearning xAPI

by Megan Torrance xAPI and the Tin Can Project. Few eLearning developers have ever developed or seen an eLearning project that uses xAPI. However, given the fact that eLearning development tools and learning platforms now support xAPI, it may be the time to jump on the xAPI bandwagon. What is xAPI? Many people say that xAPI is the next version of SCORM. And if you are tracking, you can't switch vendors. Along

The first xAPI Camp at DevLearn, the first of four events we’re putting on hosted by The eLearning Guild , is nigh upon us. The Guild helped us launch xAPI at mLearnCon back in 2012 and they have been a steadfast supporter of xAPI. Last year was the first year there was an official xAPI Track at DevLearn and, together, we are upping that ante again (…in Vegas). We may even be doing karaoke Tuesday night, after xAPI Camp, because that is how we roll.

AICC and xAPI (Experience API, or formerly Tin Can) are among the most important standards: whilst AICC has been around for a while, the xAPI is relatively recent. AICC is a well known industry standard: it was born in 1989 and it has had broad acceptance in the last year. From Tin Can to xAPI: a core called LRS. What we used to know as “ Tin Can ” is now called xAPI. It is a new concept introduced by xAPI, and it stands for Learning Record Store.

Normally, folks write up a state of the industry at the end of that year (as I did for 2017). And thus, comes the State of the E-Learning industry as rumble forward with 2019. Change of messaging, and the seemingly misunderstanding by vendors that there is a difference between training and L&D. CMI-5 increased interest among vendors, even more so, than on/off synch mobile apps for example. LRSs not being utilized by vendors who have it in their systems.

xAPI was touted as the future of eLearning back in 2013 when it was first introduced (named Tin Can at the time). xAPI has some awesome benefits that you should know about and avail of. One of the major benefits of xAPI is the lack of disruption its adoption will cause you. xAPI can do everything that your SCORM 1.2 SCORM 2004, in particular, proved to be very buggy for both eLearning pros and vendors alike. xAPI may not have swept across eLearning as expected.

Over the past three years, xAPI has emerged as the hot new standard for delivering online training. xAPI is often described as the next evolution of SCORM. What is xAPI? is still the most popular authoring standard used in eLearning, its weaknesses triggered the development of xAPI. How xAPI works.

I’ll just say it right now, the industry as a whole isn’t doing much. Yes there are vendors doing some new stuff, okay many, but a few items are not new, rather they have been around for a long time. The industry as a whole continues to miss the opportunities that are laid out before them. SaaS boost – Finally more vendors are on the appropriate path for their consumers; but the big folks are not – why? SaaS vendors rule!

” Well, my objectives with xAPI were the following: Enable data interoperability across systems. So… good job team: we standards nerds knocked out something that industry is super excited about and, in some respects, ready for. Looking at what Megan and I are implementing with xAPI, I have to call out where, in practice, the tools conforming to the spec aren’t helping with data ownership. Other LRS vendors are following suit.

That is why long-term contracts for LMS products are now rarely preferred and it is easier to switch LMS vendors as per changing requirements. Questions: What is the common identifier that allows the xAPI to connect the data provided by the ‘activity provider’ to a specific user in the LRS? Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. How do you best see xAPI interfacing with an LMS? Maybe you scored it via Wiley, but in many possibilities you purchased the content thru your LMS vendor. It’s much easier than say going directly to the content provider, buying it from them and then having them talk to your LMS vendor to put it in for you (which, honestly you should do, because it will save you money). What if instead of focusing primarly on the LMS, you went courses first from a vendor and in return got the LMS for free.

Over the years, our folks have participated in the working groups for, and the development of, standards as ubiquitous as SCORM, as forgotten as RTWS, and more recently xAPI. This initiative will remove the barrier to entry and obstacles that the DoD and many organizations face when adopting xAPI and cmi5.

There are numerous reasons why these organizations are unhappy with their LMS vendor. Over time, the organization has evolved, and training requirements have changed, but often their legacy LMS is no longer fit-for-purpose or the vendor doesn’t provide adequate support and services to meet the client’s developing needs. With the increase in remote work, many organizations need a better learning platform and vendors who do not overpromise and under deliver on their product roadmaps.
