Taken with my backwards design diagram from the learning science book, I was tasked with determining what that means. In this case, the audience can’t be mandated with classes or tutorials. I think of it as a ‘performance strategy’, not a learning one. Thus we focus on job aids and examples.

Every time we buy a new piece of technology, be it a smartphone, a TV or a blender, we need to learn how to use it. Some of us go by trial and error, few of us read the manual and the younger lot simply go online and watch tutorials about how to do it. Formal and informal learning – two peas in the same pod.

Kit, the Learning Consultant insisted the videos should be loaded on the LMS so that the time spent and results could be tracked. So the formal training needs to be sustained, and a powerful way of doing that is with an informal learning environment. The real tracking now should be done with the business scorecard.

It was great at acting as a repository that catalogued all the structured courses, stored records of learners and tracked the course completion status. However, it was not a platform that allowed unstructured and informal learning. Neither did it track data related to these informal means of learning.
