Barriers to innovation?

Learning with 'e's

Image from Pxhere In March I posted a survey question as a part of my ongoing research into the adoption of new technologies in learning. The background for this question was a statement I made during a keynote discussion session at Learning Technologies in London in January. I was asked about innovation in organisations. There are clearly more factors to consider than these as barriers to the adoption of new ideas and innovation, but this is a good start.

Information, innovation and meaning

The classic old building was transformed into a hi-tech conference venue for European Innovation Day. In a stark contrast spanning three centuries, technologically futuristic images and large screen technologies were projected onto, and embedded within, the fabric of the 230 year-old building, and this melding seemed for all the world like a metaphor for education. The centre also explores new and innovative uses of Artificial Intelligence for telecommunications.

Disruptive innovation

Learning with e's

Disruptive innovations are essential for forward movement he suggested, but the opposite is actually happening when we look at current government policies. Affordable, accessible technology is now embedded in the lives of teachers, but how at liberty are they to use them effectively in the context of school? David Muir puts it quite well on his EdCompBlog : "Is education insulated or isolated from the disruption the technology is causing elsewhere. Unported License.

Innovative practice

I love to visit innovative schools to talk to children and teachers about how they use technology, and Taupaki School fits that description. I was impressed by some of the year 8 children who were very keen to show me what they were learning using a variety of technologies and applications. One teacher told me that the use of technology, embedded into the curriculum, had been instrumental in engaging students in all subjects, and that they were motivated to go further.

LMS Technology Trends: Why Focus Is The Next Big Thing

Talented Learning

As I get deeper and deeper into the industry, I’m more convinced than ever that “focus” is the key LMS technology trend of today’s winning vendors. The industry is awash in evolving learning technology features such as micro and adaptive learning, gamification, alternate and virtual reality, xAPI, big data, social, content curation, user experience, video, integration and the list goes on and on. At the same time, it frees more funds for investment in additional innovation.

How do schools innovate?

Learning with 'e's

A recent list of 13 innovative schools is interesting because it is so diverse. Clearly innovation and creativity is not one dimensional. Some of the schools on the list are considered innovative because of the way they use their learning spaces, whilst others are vaunted because of their progressive pedagogical approaches. What makes an innovative school? Innovative building design encourages teachers and learners to take risks and to experiment.

Two innovations that have changed learning forever

Learning with 'e's

Earlier today in an interview for Sponge UK , I was asked the question: During your career in educational technology, what single innovation do you consider the most important? On the face of it, this could be quite a difficult question to answer, simply because I have been involved in the study of educational technology since 1976, almost 40 years. During that time I have seen a great number of innovations. Unported License.

Old technologies don't die

Learning with 'e's

Witnessing this scene reminds me that no matter what technologies emerge, and no matter what disruptive innovations come along, we will always have the older, more traditional media to use. We can connect to information in many ways, and we should never rule out completely the older, more traditional technologies, because they still have uses. Personal, connected digital technologies enable us to access content and interact quickly and easily. Unported License.

Disruptive innovation: Where do we go from here?

I enjoyed my ''trialogue'' with Andrew Jacobs and the audience at this year''s Learning Technologies conference. Is Open Source Ready for Extended Enterprise Learning?

Talented Learning

Because extended enterprise audiences are potentially vast and variable, buyers need a scalable licensing structure. 2) Audience Size – Core open source LMS licensing costs are zero (or minimal). Because corporations invest much less in licensing, they can invest much more in educational content, learner experience optimization, systems integration and program marketing. Because LMS licensing comes at no/low cost, nearly every budget can afford a service provider.
