“Never design anything without first writing the learning objectives.” It’s a useful rule, but only when the objectives are useful. And there’s the problem — conventional learning objectives can work against us. What do I mean by “conventional learning objectives?” Do people actually need to “learn” something? Are we writing useful objectives for the formal training bits?

One of the biggest differences is that eLearning tends to literally spell out what’s going to happen next, often with a learning objectives screen. Learning objectives are like plot points. They’re important, but there are more ways to use or handle them than to just plop them onto the traditional “Today you’re going to learn” screen at the beginning of a course. That’s how learners can feel if training’s learning objectives aren’t set up well. There are really two main types of learning objectives. Terminal objectives, which are basically the end goals, are the “big picture” of what the learner needs to be able to do. That’s a terminal objective.
