Detailing the Coherent Organization

Clark Quinn

I riffed on it for a Chief Learning Officer magazine, and my Internet Time Alliance colleagues have followed up. I had, as Harold’s original model provided the basis for, separate groups for Work Teams, Communities of Practice, and Social Networks. I ended up with the following diagram, which is very much a work in progress. Personal is where you’re working with a specific person (or recipient thereof).

How Skills Mapping Contributes to Effective People Development

Skills mapping is an advantageous, practical, and inspiring way of improving and supporting employees at work. With various backgrounds, educational paths, and experiences, we tend to have some pre-assumptions about individuals’ preparation at work.

The Coherent Organization

Jay Cross

While I’ll focus on interchanges among Harold Jarche, Clark Quinn, and myself, as with everything at the Internet Time Alliance , the discussion bears the fingerprints of Charles Jennings, Jane Hart, and Paul Simbeck-Hampson as well. The underlying concept is that organizations and their people are members of many different types of networks, for example, communities of practice, the company social network, and close-knit collaborative work teams.

How is Corporate Training Different from Academic Learning?

With the available tech today, it can be argued that if ever you want to learn anything, you just need a device, an internet connection, and a must-do attitude. The internet and a device are the only things you need. Lower cost in both devices and services paired up with an increase in mobile internet speeds have made this possible. And oh – this is already being done with virtual work teams in the business realm today.

To optimize your learning, optimize your networks

Jay Cross

The Internet Time Alliance has been brainstorming models of learning networks. Harold recently posted this model: Workers collaborate in Project Teams to get the job done. The work team is a different sort of animal because we have a job to do. Some teams are self-organizing networks; others are the tail end of command-and-control. People cooperate in External Networks to meet a shared goal. Communities in the middle do a bit of both.

5 Hopes for Our Tech Lives During A Pandemic

Our job definitions are currently morphing at the same time as our working conditions, and it seems as though we won’t have to wait as long to see the new generation of jobs that were never to be conceived before.

Your next employee training techniques are on this list!(Part 2)

Hands-on learning (which can also be called as on-the-job-training), exposes the learner to real-life work scenarios. Employee training techniques like these make sure that learning is not limited to inside the classroom, but is also demonstrated (and assimilated) during work itself. Experiential learning applies the theories discussed and the competencies developed in the classroom to the actual work environment.

How to Replace Top-Down Training with Collaborative Learning (3)

Jay Cross

Work and learning are converging, and as this change happens, the infrastructure of the old corporate learning must go – things like traditional one-size-fit-all in-person training seminars. Conventions like ASCII, programming languages, Internet protocol, and encryption were developed for corporate mainframe computers and only later adopted for personal computers. Through blog comments and blog posts, an interesting conversation is emerging around – Conversations as Part of Concept Work. It somewhat started with my post Reduce Searching Start Talking where I suggest that there are points in our concept work where we need to be ready to move from search to conversation. " Or more broadly, when is each kind of method appropriate given a specific concept work need.

Do you know what the advantages of e-learning are for companies with distributed teams?

Large companies or multinationals tend to have teams that are distributed over a large geographical area. And these aren’t the only types of businesses that have this problem: it’s increasingly common for businesses (especially startups) to hire talent around the world to work remotely instead of having their physical headquarters in a city. New technologies allow companies to work incredibly well this way, but training is where things can get tough.

?ot just cat videos: 5 Social Learning Myths

And our world, including the modern internet-based industries, has its share of myths, “old wives tales” and misinformation. But even before a formal study of social learning was put forward, people have been learning from others outside of a strict teacher-learner relationship for millennia , both in and out of school setting (at work, at play, at home, etc.). The ancient world had its myths. The medieval world had its legends and folklore.

Why Content Curation Should be in Your Skillset

Jay Cross

Instead of satisfying art lovers, corporate curation saves enormous amounts of time, keeps teams on the same page, and equips everyone with the latest insights. Curation helps individuals keep professional skills sharp, improve critical thinking, earn professional recognition, build reputation, grow personal networks, and “work out loud.” Google for “Future of Conferences” and my work comes up #2. Recruit someone to curate news to share with everyone on the team.
