Standard Options Apply

MakingBetter

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. I’m going to lay out options for how we can approach standardization and the reasoning behind them. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. Consider Breaking Up the Spec Into Separate Standards Efforts.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. As Stephen Johnson tells us, in his book Where Good Ideas Come From , the openness of standards fosters innovation. . Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

Simplify Vendor Management with a Training Services Provider

Infopro Learning

Custom eLearning programs have become the new standard. One easy and highly effective way businesses can streamline their L&D programs is by simplifying the vendor management process by working with an outsourced provider. Vendor Research and Selection.

Why Do I Need an eLearning Vendor When I Have My Own Team?

Illumen Group

Why Do I Need an eLearning Vendor When I Have My Own Team? Maybe what you really need isn’t a vendor, but rather a part-time strategic partner or developer who is there when you need them, and not when you don’t. Outsourcing to an eLearning partner ensures that your course will meet industry standards. For example, at Illumen we have designers with particular expertise working with regulatory standards for industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and hospitality.

LMS Market Trends: Issues and Opportunities

Talented Learning

If you’ve ever crossed professional paths with me, you know I’m willing to talk learning tech shop with anyone — vendors, buyers and practitioners– anytime, anywhere in the world. Every day I meet new experts and exchange ideas about what’s good, bad and ugly in the world of learning technology. As I look back at that Q&A , I see key market opportunities and issues that are very much on my mind these days.

Course Standards: Where R We Heading?

eLearning 24-7

There has been a lot of information out there , okay, I’m kidding there hasn’t been much of anything when it comes to course standards. I’ll readily admit that regardless of the course standard you use, if you create click-click-click courses, than no course standard will make it engaging. Yet here we are wondering where the course standard industry is heading or at least presumed to be heading. I’ve even seen it with LMS vendors.

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

eLearning 24-7

Below are some standard questions to ask, but are in no particular order. What about PENS or some other compliance standard? Unless you must have PENS or one of the other compliance standards, it is not needed. Vendors who have partnerships with WebEx or whomever they use, typically require you to purchase a license, which is separate from the system. Rather, “partner&# is a dual revenue steam for the vendor and their partner – a business relationship deal.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. SCORM is a fairly easy standard to deal with especially since most people are fine with a single SCO that does only single score/completion reporting. What about other Standards? Most of the time, it's to handle cross-domain issues, i.e., learning content is on different server than learning management.

LMS Vendor (what you have) vs. LMS Partner (what you want)

EthosCE

Perhaps you assumed that your LMS vendor knew that you needed less, not more, administrative tasks on your plate and that your LMS platform would have all of the features that you needed from day one. There’s a simple explanation for your predicament: you have an LMS vendor, not a CME management platform. Many CME Directors are unaware that an LMS vendor—an LMS provider focused on add-on product sales—will be anything but a partner in their CME program’s success.

Customer Excellence Pledge

eLearning 24-7

Sure there are vendors who do an exceptional job, but the fact still remains that the number one reason, people leave one learning system vendor for another is support/service. What are those statements that a vendor has to adhere to, in the Customer Excellence Pledge?

Podcast 26: How to Extend Learning Content Availability – With Troy Gorostiza

Talented Learning

Troy is a “triple threat” learning innovator with deep expertise as a content development practitioner, solutions consultant and technology vendor. And today’s interview is especially interesting because we discuss a common issue that inspired Troy’s most recent venture – the need to improve learning content availability. But sending learners to a different vendor LMS for each course makes no sense. These issues are increasingly common.

LMS Setup Fees: For some vendors it’s a cash cow

eLearning 24-7

Just as a seriously doubt many of the LMS vendors who feel it is their duty to charge one time setup fees that break your budget bank. There are plenty of vendors who do not charge any type of setup fee. Equally there are vendors who charge a setup fee for items that you need to make it go. You can buy extra training – on site for x number of days – which can be a major profit maker for a vendor. I know of vendors who charge 3K per API.

Use of IETMs for Navy Air Force Defence

S1000D is the European standard of technical publications or technical documentation being followed in Aerospace since 1980, which uses CSDB, a Common source database which is used for preparing, managing, and publishing technical information for a warship, or Aerospace, or even Civil airlines too.

LMS: Further Due Diligence

Your Training Edge

You can probably take a deep breath after your selection of LMS vendors has been made. During the time period between the selection and the signing of contracts, start moving forward on conducting some final due diligence in relation to the LMS, its functionality, its specifications, and the vendor. But you most certainly want to review the contracts yourself, especially if the legal counsel was not involved in vendor selection.

What is LTI?

CourseArc

Learning Tools Interoperability, or LTI, is a standard published by the IMS Global Learning Consortium that makes it possible to integrate platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Blackboard or Canvas with third party tools and vendors such as CourseArc. This standard makes it possible for third party tools to integrate quickly and easily, without having to create different integration solutions for each LMS. CourseArc eLearning Tools IMS Standards

LMS RFP Tips: How to Find Your Best Learning Technology Fit

Talented Learning

RFPs help buyers get organized, formalize requirements, evaluate vendors logically, create a historical record and show vendors you are serious. It also includes instructions on how and when vendors should submit a response. There are nearly 700 vendors specializing in learning solutions for corporate, academic, association and continuing education needs. At a low LMS price point, there may be no practical reason to issue a formal RFP.

How to Get the Most out of Your LMS Demo

Association eLearning

If you’re in the beginning stages of selecting a learning management system (LMS) for your association, you might be feeling overwhelmed by all the choices and information from various vendors. If you and the vendor can spare an additional half an hour or more, great! Before your demo, provide your LMS vendor with this scenario (and any others you and your team come up with) and ask them to demonstrate these steps within the system.

How to choose the right LMS

eLearning 24-7

The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. No vendor could say honestly that their system is the best for you, because they are missing a lot of information. The other issue is that the people providing the information are also limited to what you have stated. Write vendors’ names on pencils and throw them at the ceiling. Whichever sticks – is your vendor. There is no one size fits all vendor.

These are your pressing reqs and most systems offer them as standards. What about a payment gateway – does the LMS vendor assist you with this or do you have to find your own? Drilling down, will provide you with additional information you need to ask and know, and as a result, even when looking at a potential vendor’s site, you will be able to see what they offer in this area. 5 Tips for a Smooth LMS Integration

Meridian

What business problems or issues will the LMS need to address? Stakeholders need to agree on specific requirements first, rather than spending implementation time with the vendor while internal discussion and debate is going on. Metrics provide a standard baseline which everyone can understand. Poor planning in this phase can create delays in the project timeline – or worse – issues after go-live.

Customer Complaints, How to Avoid the Traps

eLearning 24-7

Sometimes it is a result of the vendor, other times it is a failure of due diligence on the part of the soon to be customer. The vendor’s salesperson tells you want you want to hear. problems, no issues&# – To learn the real truth about Interoperability. Integration with ERP solutions – “We have never had any issues with any ERP system. It depends of course, but rarely has it been an issue.&#. I expect nothing less from the vendor.

Presidential Politics, LMSs – The Cycle

eLearning 24-7

Personally, I have no issue with that, but what I do have an issue with is when the results are stamped to mean everyone. Others though will espouse that Xs % hate or find issue with this or that. What you get is only what the vendor tells you. Considering that the number of vendors who are public are minimal, the transparency flag isn’t flying high here. How many times have you heard this from vendors.

E-Learning: Did you know.

eLearning 24-7

I love going to LMS sites and seeing a list of clients that the vendor lists. Especially the LMS vendors who also create custom content/development. That some vendors who provide a list of clients may not be clients of their LMS, rather they are current or past clients of custom course development. Yep, you read that right, and best or worst of all, they (vendor) never tells you, unless you inquiry. For the vendor to achieve success in the demo.

Top Ten Learning Management Systems – July Rankings

eLearning 24-7

I love the multi-tenant (extended enterprise) functionality, SMS notification (text) as well as the standard e-mail notification. As many of you know that biggest issue we often face in training is the infamous, “I never got that e-mail” Well, how about that text notification? How a vendor of this size and quality can have this business approach in this day and age is beyond me. Any vendor can do that. #3 Back for another installment of the rankings.

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors). Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name.

Top 10 LMSs for 2013

eLearning 24-7

Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. Rankings are based on my directories which are updated monthly; I also keep a separate directory which will contain more vendors than listed within the visible directories – reason being it offers clients (those who hire me – buyers to have an added bonus, of course it contains much more info); that said the monthly directories provide key info and in future updates have new columns added.

Break it down! (No it’s not Hammer Time! Yet)

eLearning 24-7

If your goal is just to post the course on a server and let people access it, just for the sake of learning and you don’t care about tracking of any sort – then no, you do not need any compliance standard. For whatever reason- okay to try to set themselves apart – some vendors have created the term “training management” Honestly, they could call it “online authoring system with a few reports and no frills” and it would be the same thing.

LMS Customization

eLearning 24-7

Ask and see what can be done by the vendor – Customize it! Customization can be a big deal when it comes to your LMS/LCMS for a simple fact, many of times what you are purchasing is “off the shelf&# and comes with standard features, capabilities. Plus many vendors will include special “customized&# options for you – and then tell you what they are – during your discussions or upon your final negotiations.

Bridge over troubled authoring tool waters

eLearning 24-7

Why are some vendors making it impossible? Why are some vendors treating you as a spy or something sinister when you just want to try out the product? You would think that with over 140 authoring tools on the market, vendors would want you to try out their product before dropping any type of cash. While there are plenty of vendors who offer trials, without you having to contact them first or register, there are plenty who do not. Less than 10 vendors.

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. This leads to the bigger issue. One vendor is months behind their release schedule. Another vendor is suffering Q/A issues.

3 Things That Will Matter to Learning Leaders in 2018

It’s a top issue, for sure, and it will likely remain a priority in the coming years. New hires are herded through a standard process that provides little more than a surface-level overview. L&D vendor selection has become critical. As L&D needs expand, so too does the demand for learning vendors who can provide quick, personalized, task-focused solutions for every employee, whether they are in-house, remote, full-time or contingent.
