He reads books, accesses the Britannica Encyclopedia CD on his PC, participates in group discussions at his university, reads journals, magazines and newspapers in the library, logs on to the (slowly working) internet once in a while, watches TV, listens to the radio, and so on. By and large, this constitutes John’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE). A personal learning environment refers to the tools, technologies, resources etc.

These tools, services and technologies become a part of your personal learning environment or PLE. The PLE is an approach rather than a technology. Much has been written on PLEs, including a wealth of peer reviewed journal articles that feature empirical research. You can trawl the Web (using your PLE tools) and discover many videos, websites and blogs that focus largely on PLEs and their place in education. Personal. Idiosyncratic. Individual. Separate. Different.

No one seems to be able to agree on what a PLE is. I simply point them in the direction of the journal I edit: Interactive Learning Environments. Last night, during a panel discussion for the Plymouth Education Society, I made a statement that the current UK National Curriculum doesn't make a lot of room for personalised learning.

One of my third year students, Dan Kennedy, has had his first article published in a new journal. The Plymouth Student Educator , a peer-reviewed online journal has been created to showcase the best of University of Plymouth students' work. Students need to score more than 70 for their assignments to be even considered for review, and then their work must go through just as vigorous a process of scrutiny as they would if they submitted their work to any other academic journal.

Some of my previous students have published in journals in the past few years. Check out this little gem from Dan Kennedy on the VLE/PLE debate. I''m a big advocate of student publications. Many have some great ideas to share, and we encourage student blogging very strongly in Plymouth.
