To “Kirkpatrick” or not to “Kirkpatrick”, that is the Question (or is it?)

Learning Rebels

To “Kirkpatrick” or not to “Kirkpatrick”, that is the question. Many a person has debated the Kirkpatrick evaluation taxonomy. To name a few: Dan Pontefract: Dear Kirkpatrick’s: You Still Don’t Get It (a personal favorite). Jane Bozarth: Alternatives to Kirkpatrick . Donald Clark: Using Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels to Create and Evaluate Informal and Social Learning Process . Here we go again.

Alternatives to Kirkpatrick

While the Kirkpatrick taxonomy is something of a sacred cow in training circles—and much credit goes to Donald Kirkpatrick for being the first to attempt to apply intentional evaluation to workplace training efforts—it is not the only approach. Apart from being largely atheoretical and ascientific (hence, 'taxonomy', not 'model' or 'theory'), several critics find the Kirkpatrick taxonomy seriously flawed.

Instructional Design: The Process – 1

Origin Learning

Enough has been written about ID and its various theories and models that define the various approaches or strategies to learning design. The instructional design theories have been the guiding beacon for the new IDs, however, if not properly utilised during the design phase, these theories lose their practicality. The objective of this sectionis only to introduce the concepts and encourage the beginners to learn more about the models and theories.

Maturity Models and the Learning Organization

From Maslow to Kirkpatrick: The Pioneers of the Maturity Model. Abraham Maslow drew on observations from popular psychological theories of the 1940s to establish a model representing the various needs of every individual. From this, he derived a theory of motivation. Part 1/3.

Skills Instructional Designers Should Have

We are excited to see what new gadgets are available and what new theories are being developed in instructional design. Unsurprisingly, we see that the three most often used design models continue to be ADDIE, Bloom’s Learning Taxonomy, and KirkPatrick’s 4 Levels of Training Evaluation. Instructional design is a robust field that requires constant vigilance to new technology and methodology.

Of all the training models and theories, this one is unusual because it originated in sports rather than directly in business. So, functional training is geared towards action and behavior rather than knowledge and theory. 4) Kirkpatrick Model.

Why I Love Instructional Design

Ashley Chiasson

I Can Appreciate the Underlying Theories. There are a lot of cool educational theories that underlie and inform Instructional Design, and they allow me to customize learning experiences further by applying concepts from these theories in order to optimize overall effectiveness. A lot of folks know about Bloom’s Taxonomy, but do they also know about Gagne’s 9 Events? Kirkpatrick’s levels? There are so many other theories! The Backstory.

Donald Clark on training departments…

Jay Cross's Informal Learning

I argued that training is mired in old, faddish theory; Bloom, Gagne, Maslow, Kirkpatrick – train the trainer courses are still full of old behaviourist theory (killed stone dead by Chomsky in 1959) trapping us in 50 year old theories that holds the industry back. Kill Kirkpatrick before he kills you. If you want to learn what is really going on in learning and development while rolling on the floor laughing, you’ve got to read Donald Clark.
