To be connected to colleagues and co-workers, be in office as much as possible. Work —complex knowledge work requires solitude as well as collaboration. In today’s non-hierarchical, networked organizations with fluid job roles, conversations over coffee are often how people find out about skills and common passions. If anyone reading this is a knowledge worker and is thinking about working from home, read Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow.

Also, at a time when the average knowledge worker is struggling to set aside time (just five minutes per day) for formal learning, the traditional learning system is quite redundant. . And they start avoiding traditional corporate learning solutions (such as the learning management systems). . Macro or structured learning is great for on-boarding and helping employees develop a new skill to seek a promotion or change in role.

The discussions are very helpful in formulating my thoughts on the issues of social learning tools, technologies and impacts on performance. L ast year I led workshops in London, Madrid , San Jose, Quebec, and Berlin on how to sell social networking and informal learning to senior management. The workshops culminate with everyone role-playing that interaction. Here we go: Learning is a dirty word because executive managers have a hard time hearing it. You think of improving skills and increasing knowledge. They are workers first, and learners second. Knowledge is inherently unmanageable.

In today’s world where knowledge generation is increasing and half-life is shortening at an alarming rate, access to knowledge is where the power truly lies. Wirearchy is an emerging organizing principle based at least in part on shared knowledge and insights. In the knowledge economy, employees have no problem getting access to content.

Boot camps raise many interesting questions about the efficiency/effectiveness/ethics of knowledge cramming, which I have yet to get my head round. All sorts of enterprise-wide software systems have been introduced to try and bring order to the world of learning at work - learning management systems, learning content management systems, knowledge management systems and so on.

Knowledge work and learning to work smarter are becoming indistinguishable. Old-style training enraged many managers because it was separate from work. It needn’t be this way, particularly since knowledge work and learning are nearly indistinguishable. Industrial age workers created value in factories. Knowledge workers create value in workscapes. In most cases, the knowledge work pays the freight; the informal learning comes along for the ride.
