The E-Learning Curve

We define e-learning as the continuous assimilation of knowledge and skills by adults stimulated by synchronous and asynchronous learning events – and sometimes Knowledge management outputs – which are authored, delivered engaged with, supported and administered using internet technologies. Unravelling The Relevance Of Social Cognitive Theory in Online Learning

ProProfs

Although, the situation is quite embarrassing but this proves an important point that we humans many times prefer to learn unfamiliar tasks based on ‘observation’. This leads us to the theory by psychologist Albert Bandura known as the ‘Social Cognitive Theory’. What is Social Cognitive Theory? Started as the ‘Social learning theory’ in the 1960s by Albert Bandura, it is widely used in psychology, education and communication domains.

Learning and Performance Ecosystems

Apparently, Learning and Development (L&D) doesn’t require air to survive. Pushing courses out is one thing, having an effective learning and performance ecosystem is another matter entirely. One was from the field of architecture and the other was by Harold Jarche on workplace and learning. “ Wilkinson proposed building out the entire GLG office to accommodate “activity-based working”–the theory that employees no longer need personal workstations so much as they need many different settings in which to meet, collaborate, or focus, depending on which tasks they’re working on. In addition, tacit knowledge flows best in trusted networks.

Connectivism and the modern learner

Soon after, I attended a presentation about m-learning by Jan Herrington, in which she too mentioned connectivism. So after several hours of unenlightened googling, I decided to bite the bullet, go back to first principles and read George Siemens’ seminal paper, Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age. Siemens describes connectivism as “the integration of principles explored by chaos, network, and complexity and self-organisation theories&#.

Connectivism also addresses the challenges that many corporations face in knowledge management activities.

How Social Networks Can Harness the Power of Weak Ties | Social.

Dashe & Thomson

If we separate the human aspect of social networking from the technology, we can learn a lot more about the power of networks – not just from today’s pundits, but from many years of sociological research on the topic. If we apply the ‘weak ties’ theory, we might be able to spot people in our network who are both: a) Loosely tied to us (i.e., Learning and development professionals should remember the Weak Ties theory when designing social learning systems.

4 types of navigation flows for micro-learning courses

QuoDeck

Micro-learning online courses have been easily accepted by today’s millennial workforce. There are no large chunks of content to process, and it facilitates learning rather than imposing it on the learner. This is the traditional flow of learning management systems. The content escalates progressively in complexity or the depth of the knowledge that is being disseminated. A lot of interest loss in e-learning content happens due to this.

Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do. Fortunately, most human behaviour is learned observationally through modelling; from observing others one forms an idea of how new behaviours are performed, and on later occasions this coded information serves as a guide for action.” ” – Albert Bandura (Originator of Social Learning Theory). “

I don’t talk much about training or learning any more. You can train people but they may or may not learn. Learning is better than training, but learning is not enough to make sure the job gets done. Moreover, people often fail to put what they learn into practice. It may or may not involve learning. It’s about cultivating a healthy learning ecology. Work and learning are two sides of the same coin. Higher ground.
