Whereas most people are concerning themselves with the new social and collaboration technologies, or how to get people to collaborate, for me the key to successful social learning is how the individual engages in his/her networks and contributes what s/he has learned or is learning along the way. PKM is therefore the key to successful social learning.

My previous blog post that revealed that around 70% of respondents in my recent survey found training (including e-learning) “unimportant” or only “somewhat important” has generated quite a bit of interest. A number of comments focused on how we now need to make training/e-learning more “engaging” or “effective” to recapture the interest of these people. Adopting a BYOL strategy will however require a different approach to learning and development.

While we would love to think that employees will--seeing the looming complexities and unpredictability of work today--become self-driven, autonomous learners keen to acquire all the skills and knowledge required, this is not what usually happens. This impacts the way they take responsibility for their personal learning as well. There are organizations that encourage and facilitate self-driven learning. Being learning agile is the only way to move forward.

When George Siemens , Dave Cormier and Stephen Downes came up with the concept in 2008, they had a vision of how a “learning design” based on Connectivism could change the face of learning and collaboration. All of this made me think I should write a post on working out loud and its place in workplace learning. As is my wont, I tend to look at everything mostly through my L&D lens, especially when it comes to learning and sharing at the workplace. In my mind, working out loud can be one of the means to strengthen organizational learning. Such sharing can trigger serendipity and meaningful conversation -- two of the critical factors that can shape organizational learning.

I just finished reading Harold Jarche’s post: Seek, Sense, Share In the post, he talks about how seeking information, then applying our personal sense-making filters to it, and finally sharing it helps us to see the interconnections, patterns and the larger whole. This is why the process of “seek, sense, share” becomes so important in one’s personal learning and knowledge management. The post made me pause and reflect on the position/use of each in my PKM.
