Experiencing eLearning

These are my live blogged notes from Harold Jarche’s LearnTrends session on Personal Knowledge Management. Sense-making with PKM. PKM is a set of problem-solving skills for work, focused on getting things done but not necessarily task focused. A PKM Method. Other models for PKM. PKM is very much individualized process–we have to figure out how to make sense of things. How does PKM relate to L&D organizations?

Idea Management and Design – You Mean PKM?

Nick Leffler

Idea Management and Design, that sounds close to what I know as Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). After reading a few lines from the MSLOC430 blog it really does sound like PKM. Breaking down idea management from the MSLOC430 blog, it’s very familiar to me: Sourcing – who contributes ideas, and how do you collect them (seek). So, could Open IDEO and the concept of idea management be a problem? Group knowledge I think can be a problem.

The answer lies across several domains of a knowledge worker’s practice. These are good practices that help us grow our knowledge, but what we really need are mindful, disciplined processes for managing it on a daily basis. What we need is to exercise personal knowledge management, or PKM. PKM is distinct from organizational knowledge management, which is widely used today. Three Key Components of PKM. Topic 2: Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) is Not a Technology…so how do we help organizations learn informally? Harold Jarche, writer and consultant on social learning and PKM, often explains that informal learning is how we naturally learn and NOT a product that can be purchased. Every time we search Google or Youtube, ask a colleague for help, or read an article, we are managing our own knowledge. Harold Jarche: PKM Is Not a Technology.

Attention Spans Are Getting Shorter

It’s more important than ever to learn how to manage all this information. It’s not possible to read everything you run across, so it’s important to learn how to manage information in a meaningful way. Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) is a great way to manage that. My favorite person to follow that writes regularly on PKM is Harold Jarche , he runs workshops that help people get a handle on their professional improvement through PKM.

Are you supporting new fashioned learning in the workplace?

Jane Hart

But let’s be clear, even when newer social and informal approaches are added to this old model that let you learn things a little differently, if your learning experience has in any way been organized (and/or managed) by someone else , this is still “old fashioned” learning. It is a very useful approach for getting you up to scratch quickly on a topic with an existing body of knowledge or wisdom. New domains of knowledge are appearing which have yet to be structured and organized.

It all starts with one new piece of knowledge at a time.
