LearnTrends: Personal Knowledge Management

Experiencing eLearning

These are my live blogged notes from Harold Jarche’s LearnTrends session on Personal Knowledge Management. Sense-making with PKM. PKM is a set of problem-solving skills for work, focused on getting things done but not necessarily task focused. A PKM Method. Interesting discussion in the chat about whether if you don’t pay for services if you can trust it. Other models for PKM. How does PKM relate to L&D organizations?

From Learning Management to Personal Knowledge Management

But in fact it has been clear for some time that many individuals are already taking responsibility for not only acquiring new knowledge and skills but for a wide range of activities for their continuous learning and professional development. Acquiring new knowledge and skills – e.g. in webinars, online workshops, MOOCs, and through videos and screencasts, etc. Here’s a short presentation by Harold Jarche that explains PKM and his Seek-Sense-Share PKM framework.

Are you supporting new fashioned learning in the workplace?

But let’s be clear, even when newer social and informal approaches are added to this old model that let you learn things a little differently, if your learning experience has in any way been organized (and/or managed) by someone else , this is still “old fashioned” learning. It is a very useful approach for getting you up to scratch quickly on a topic with an existing body of knowledge or wisdom. New domains of knowledge are appearing which have yet to be structured and organized.

One of the ways to keep on top of our game, and remain on the cutting edge of relevant skills and knowledge is to be a part of communities of practices and to focus on building and maintaining our PLNs with a deliberate intention to learn, share and collaborate. Moreover, since a large part of the skills and knowledge required to handle tasks and problems today are emergent, the possibility of training gets ruled out. Social Learning Cannot Be A Bolt-On Strategy

It’s a strategic approach to shaping a business culture, highly dependent upon executive leadership and corporate strategy, including business process design, risk management, leadership development, financial controls and use of business analytics. It means altering how the management models operate; it means questioning the existing management practices and discarding those that do not align with the spirit of social business.

What Makes a MOOC a MOOC?

Employees are rejecting them; L&D is desperately trying to prove the ROI of these programs while employees are finding their own means of acquiring the required skills and knowledge. They are using various tools for PKM ( Personal Knowledge Management ) and taking onus of their own learning. Refer to Harold Jarche’ blog for a deeper understanding of PKM. Trust, respect, and sharing are the mantras. Knowledge hoarding and hoarders are weeded out.

It is in communities that knowledge is exchanged and challenges solved.

Revisiting My Learning Journey on Social Media

ID Reflections

While the post leaves much to be desired from the point of view of analysis, knowledge and maturity, it’s still a critical part of my learning journey. When I trace the path back, I can very clearly plot my Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) approach. I consciously follow people who I trust and who become my curators. On my way to office today, I was pondering about my evolving use of social media.

They require the sharing of tacit knowledge, which cannot easily be put into a manual. In addition, tacit knowledge flows best in trusted networks. This trust also promotes individual autonomy and can become a foundation for organizational learning, as knowledge is freely shared. Without trust, few people are willing to share their knowledge.
