Work Skills Keeping Up?

In New Work and New Work Skills , I discuss the fact that most of us have not participated in formal learning since college on foundational knowledge work skills - especially metacognitive skills. Most of us have strong skills in some areas and are much weaker in others simply due to the fact that we acquire our skills in completely ad hoc ways. Our work skills cannot sit still.

The point, however, is from the point of the view of the learner, all the resources needed are ‘to hand’ through every stage of knowledge work. Networks grow from separate nodes, to a hierarchical organization where one node manages the connections, but the true power of a network is unleashed when every node knows what the goal is and the nodes coordinate to achieve it. It is this unleashing of the power of the network that we want to facilitate.

Because I love what I do (and I am hugely fortunate in that sense), it’s very easy to let my work consume me and my time. Much has been written about priorities and work life balance — especially for women. To strike a work-life balance, work from home as much as possible (most of the time). This taught me a few things about work, technology and myself.

One of the favorite quotes I used to use during presentations was Drucker - The most important contribution of management in the 21st century will be to increase knowledge-worker productivity. This is a big reason that I started Work Literacy. I firmly believe that all management and workplace learning professionals need to be constantly looking at how we can improve the performance of knowledge workers. Setting up a SharePoint for a community or work team is very different from teaching them about Personal Learning. In fact, the lack of attention to this topic was the reason I founded Work Literacy in June of 2008. And once you begin to really fall behind on this stuff, your skills will atrophy to the point where you are hopeless.

Our formal learning approaches too often don’t follow how our brains really work. It’s part of what my colleague Harold Jarche talks about when saying “work is learning and learning is work”, the notion that as organizations start empowering workers to adapt to the increasing complexity, there will be no difference between work and learning, and we’ll have to move away from the ‘event’ model of learning and start integrating learning more closely into our activities.

My interpretation of the Agile philosophy I am trying to acquire better ways of learning and building personal knowledge networks and helping others do it. With the unknown and the complex becoming the norm in knowledge work, adaptability is the key to dealing with challenges, to be comfortable with ambiguity, and to move to a state where we are constantly learning. Generalization helps in a number of ways ( I am referring to generalization around one’s core skills ).

One of the questions being raised this week in the free, online course Work Literacy: Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals is how social networks impact personal learning. To me, this is a critical part of The New Skills for knowledge workers. And what I often cite as the biggest change in knowledge work skills over the past 20 years is the change in access to people. In these cases, a new kind of conversation, distributed work is required.
