Work Skills Keeping Up?

In New Work and New Work Skills , I discuss the fact that most of us have not participated in formal learning since college on foundational knowledge work skills - especially metacognitive skills. Most of us have strong skills in some areas and are much weaker in others simply due to the fact that we acquire our skills in completely ad hoc ways. A lot of people who are concept workers use Google every day and have no idea that the ~ operator even exists.

Eg some can ask questions and harness a network. There are also several studies of knowledge worker practices that suggest that a lot of what is effective is quite personal. That said, I think there is a tendency to lean on the skills that we are good at and not use other approaches when they are called for. If you are really good at searching on Google, then you may not leverage your network even when it's very much called for.

To be connected to colleagues and co-workers, be in office as much as possible. Work —complex knowledge work requires solitude as well as collaboration. In today’s non-hierarchical, networked organizations with fluid job roles, conversations over coffee are often how people find out about skills and common passions. It’s definitely a skill much needed in today’s extrovert oriented, non-hierarchical workplaces. Are you a knowledge worker working from home?

The paragraph below taken from Harold Jarche’s post Success depends on who we work with reminded me of a post I had written some time back, the Molotov cocktail = Weak ties x complicated knowledge. These networks were not well connected and contained mostly weak ties. The networks that best exhibited the small-world property were those that had the greatest success. Weak ties create havoc when people need to transfer tacit knowledge.
