Anatomy of a PLE

Learning with e's

Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona. My personal view is that students own and create their PLE but that the iMLE also has something to offer them, even though it is highly problematic in its current form. Firstly, we need to understand the true nature of the PLE - its anatomy.

From being providers of knowledge, they must now act as facilitators of information. Trainers must focus on providing fast access to accurate information and building upon the knowledge base of learners by actively sharing and discussing ideas, rather than just being uni-directional transmitters of information.

These tools, services and technologies become a part of your personal learning environment or PLE. The PLE is an approach rather than a technology. It is something that evolves as we evolve, and adapts to our new knowledge and skills, our changing contexts and our circumstances. You can trawl the Web (using your PLE tools) and discover many videos, websites and blogs that focus largely on PLEs and their place in education. Personal. Idiosyncratic. Individual. Separate.

The personal learning environment (PLE) is still a bone of contention. He reasons that for Vygotsky, learning features three distinct layers: 1) What learners can achieve independently, 2) what they can do with the help of someone else (he calls this a more knowledgeable other or MKO and 3) that which is beyond the learner's reach, even with the help of an MKO. For me, the PLE is peculiar to the individual who makes it.

Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Unlike a PLE, an ILE is communal. However, how we assess that knowledge is bizarrely old fashioned. Conversely, if someone passes the assessment because they already have the knowledge, what’s the problem? They cover all sources of knowledge. A touch dramatic, isn’t it?

Why should we question whether students have the competency to build their own PLEs, when in fact most learners already have their own PLE structure of tools sorted out when they arrive at university. As they gain more knowledge of their subject, broaden their personal learning networks and gain access to more content, so they modify their PLE to accommodate all the necessary storage, tagging and co-creation of content that ensues. Many pundits of Web 2.0, Social Networking, e-Learning, training and education are raising the issue about people's inability to process information overload. Is there a methodology or thinking process that can help people train themselves to think critically and manage massive information and get to the end results?

In his chapter, he concentrates on learning in the workplace, and predicts that PLEs will have: a profound effect in systems for teaching and learning, on pedagogic approaches to learning, and on knowledge development and sharing (p 120). He articulates his position as such: “…a one-or-the-other choice between the two is a false choice between knowledge-dissemination technologies and community-building tools. While the ILE is designed to bridge the gap between the LMS and the PLE, it purposefully keeps them apart.

THE EVOLUTION OF LEARNING

Origin Learning

“Learning” by itself is a more personal endeavor towards gaining the required knowledge. The term personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals. Traditionally, different societies in different parts of the globe approached education (a.k.a) learning, based on the demands of the land.

Recognizing this learning and making good use of it requires effective personal knowledge management practices. For knowledge workers in different fields, we have an awful lot to keep up with (wide and deep), and this is becoming increasingly impossible, especially at the increasing rate of change. The author originally used the phrase, “Personal Learning Environment (PLE),” based on the theory of connectivism conceptualized by George Siemens and Stephen Downes.

When PLE's are created from workflows and use cases to support informal learning, the process is more open-ended, self structured and individualized. When PLE's are intended for learning empathy and other advanced capabilities, the learning is freed from imposed structures and controls.
