Social Learning: An Ongoing Experiment

CLO Magazine

Psychologist Albert Bandura’s social learning theory suggests that people learn from one another through observation, imitation and modeling. In a famous series of experiments to demonstrate his theory, Bandura studied children’s behavior after they watched a human adult model act aggressively toward a Bobo doll — a toy with a rounded bottom that returns to an upright position after it has been knocked down.

People Development: Stop Spending, Start Thinking

Depressingly often, like aspiring exercisers with piles of laundry sitting on their treadmill, they show ubiquitous signs of abandoned efforts: faded motivational posters, certificates and dusty stress toys with familiar consulting brands. Similarly, marketing lures managers to boast trophy certificates on social media. We often start from several competing assessment tools, competency and leadership models that confuse managers and undermine HR’s credibility.

Learning Visions

How Kaplan applied social and how that has changed the way work gets done. He thought social was about the technology. This whole social thing has nothing to do with technology. With no toys and no budget. Cuz we didn''t have the toys. Social = ability for people to engage and share. Confluence has a commenting box, which made it social. Went after Leadership Training first. Needed to tie the social bit to the work.

When Technology is your Friend: Regaining Control of your Content

Challenge to Learn

Pick easy, user-friendly tools (ideally, tools that require no training) and adopt one new "toy" at a time. I would love to learn how to code but I teach graduate level Ethics and Leadership courses, not coding. E-learning students often crave social contact and interaction. Thank You for Sharing: The Next Generation of Extended Enterprise Learning

Degreed

Back in the day, we were all taught to share, whether it was a new toy, afterschool TV time, or the last piece of cake. We see people sharing their cars on Lyft, their homes on Airbnb, and the details of their lives on social media. For this use case, we allow social sharing among the sites, so employees at one organization can follow, recommend to, and interact with other employees at other organizations.

Engage Passive Learners

CLO Magazine

These behaviors can negatively impact the learning experience for even the most enthusiastic participants, and an estimated 60 percent of people are passive learners, according to a 2009 presentation from leadership development firm Lominger. Yet Debra Clawar, global head of talent management, leadership development and staffing for Novartis Pharmaceuticals AG, issues this caveat. This is because lurking behaviors are the norm on social networking sites.

mLearning Trends

And highly capable tablets and eBook readers now occupy prime real estate in many of our briefcases and messenger bags and likely sit atop everyone else’s tech toy wish list. Not that companies need to even create “games” per se; rather, the trend will be towards gamifying our standard formal learning actions and informal social interactions through the addition of point systems, achievement leveling/scaling, overall leader boards, badging systems and tangible reward/incentives.
