With the Southampton PLE Conference #PLE_SOU at full throttle, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate my views on the personal web. Personal Web Tools (PWTs) are thought by some to be synonymous with PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) but the two should not be confused. Sound like a PLE? Almost, but not quite.

Some argued strongly for sole student ownership, vehemently opposed to any institutional meddling in a personal learning environment.

Since I posted the ' Two fingered salute ' earlier this week several people have asked me what I meant by 'personal web'. I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). Having said that, each and every one of the above could be mediated through web tools, but they are not exclusively so.

I think that Managed Learning Environments are like Pompeii. They are doomed, because firstly, everything that you pay to do on an MLE can be done outside, on the web, for free. Secondly, the new generation of social networking students don't want or need to be managed. MLEs are in my opinion, cities of the dead.

I am against the sterile, meaningless Managed Learning Environments (read BlackBoard, SharePoint and yes, even Moodle) that universities and colleges push which are purpose built to maintain strict control. Anything an MLE can do, the social web can do just as well, if not better. There is a tension between the Web 2.0
