Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion

Tony Karrer

I've run across a few different posts talking about Personal Work and Learning Environments which I have tentatively started to call PWLE - pronounced p-whale. The reason why I think it's worth us talking about tools and maps and basically what is your PWLE (p-whale) is that it's helpful for us to figure out how to support our own personal work and learning. And points us back to Stephen Downes and the skills that we need to learn to be successful in this new world.

In my previous post I looked at the individual’s perspective of workplace learning and included a graphic showing how individuals learn at and for work in 10 main ways. SOCIAL LEARNING CANNOT BE A BOLT-ON STRATEGY

Learnnovators

Don Tapscott (italics mine) I recently wrote about the challenges of integrating social learning in the workplace. Social Learning and social business go hand in hand. To facilitate social learning, an organization has to become a social business first. When we talk about social learning, we are talking about the fundamental organizational structure of a business. The current failure of organizations to integrate social learning stems from their bolt-on strategy.

Social Media for Knowledge Workers

Tony Karrer

Subscribe to the Best of eLearning Learning for updates from this blog and other eLearning blogs Last week I had a presentation around using Social Media and Web 2.0 tools to improve your performance as a knowledge worker. One of the questions that always comes up is: How do I find more information to help me get started? The answer is that this information is a bit hard to come by. There’s a lot out there, but it’s often hard to find information that helps you get start.

Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

I've been reading a lot over the past few months around Personal Learning Environments and a lot of related material. adoption is getting folks to manage their personal knowledge and adopt practices like blogging for personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal learning. Learning-Knowledge-Work - they really are the same and I need to do them all at once. So, any suggestion on what the name for this system (or environment) should be?

Tool Set 2009

Tony Karrer

I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. I'm hoping to address questions such as: How do you create a personal tool set or Personal Learning Environment (PLE) for yourself? But I'm worried, because while I just got through writing about my concern in Using SharePoint that learning organizations seemed to be making the same mistake of Not Preparing Workers for Web 2.0.

Taking gamification in training to the next level

She rejected my call and I got three very bewildering texts: “bus” “can’t phone” “chasing pkm”. For corporate learning, the rise of gamification means that L&D professionals need to step up their game. Education as a field has always been closely connected to behavioral psychology and the latter has long been postulating that games have a tremendously positive impact on learning. The most ambitious ones set out to scaffold learning with increasing challenges.

Social Learning Cannot be a Bolt-On Strategy

ID Reflections

Social Learning and social business go hand in hand. To facilitate social learning, an organization has to become a social business first. When we talk about social learning, we are talking about the fundamental organizational structure of a business. A truly social business encapsulates the necessary preconditions for social learning -- transparent, supportive and collaborative. A piecemeal approach to social learning will only serve to confound us further.
