“One small step for e-learning technology, One giant leap for the e-learning industry.” ~ Rustici Software INTRODUCTION. Tin Can API (or ‘Experience API’) is one of the most extensively discussed technical topics amongst learning professionals all over the world today. This is mainly because of the relevance it carries in today’s world of ‘Learning Transformation’. Most informal learning is happening even while learners are offline (without being connected to the LMS).

Online courses must die!

E-Learning Provocateur

If we dispense with online courses in favour of PDFs, how can we incorporate interactivity into the learning experience? Enter the Informal Learning Environment (ILE). Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Unlike a PLE, an ILE is communal. An ILE is a scalable and flexible learning environment.

In addition to less than inspiring visuals, most LMSs don’t offer individualized learning paths. Most LMSs are only capable of tracking participate and pass/fail, which isn’t enough to evaluate the efficacy of your program -- let alone link it to business results. Introducing Your New Best Friend: The PLE The solution to the LMS problem is a move towards leaner, more agile training delivery systems, like Personalized Learning Environments (PLEs).

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 My Personalized Personal Work Learning Environmental World Tony Karrer asked in the comments on my PLE post yesterday , Im curious if you distinguish your learning environment (tools, skills, etc.) from your work environment (tools, skills) in any significant way (especially in the context of tacit work)? Learning never stops, does it?

4 Key Emerging Trends in LMS

Upside Learning

Today, after the rapid evolution of the LMS – hastened by several factors, right from the inclusion of social learning tools, to an ever increasing need for usability – many things have changed, and still continue to change, in the LMS. This trend will benefit not only large companies but even the smallest of the learning organizations. 2.Personal Learning Environment (PLE). These figures underline growing dependency on games to attend the learning goal.

Off the rails?

Learning with 'e's

There is no deviation from the track (unless there is a disaster and there is a derailment - trains run on the rails), and generally there is a prescribed timetable that dictates the schedule of arrivals and departures of all trains in the network. This is a metaphor for personalised learning, with the personal learning environment supporting an individual's learning. To learn at this level of individualisation, the learner requires several things.

6 Emerging Technologies in Education

LearnDash

It certainly is an exciting time to be involved with learning and technology. Virtual learning environments are one example of cloud computing. One example is a group of K-12 students using an iPhone to gather and track GPS-tagged bird sightings for a WildLab proram. Gaming - Using game-based learning scenarios allows for experimentation, the exploration of identities, and even failure in a safe environment.

Peak practice

I have made it up over the Alps by train into the sleepy Austrian town of Villach, where we hold the annual Interactive Computer Aided Learning Conference (ICL). Every year the ICL conference seems to be veering more toward e-learning and away from computer science, which I think is a good thing. We need to concentrate more on the learning and less on the technology - more on the pedagogy and less on 'this is the technology and this is what it does'.

Do You WANT an LMS? Does a Learner WANT an LMS?

Tony Karrer

I believe we are poised to see this happen in the world of the Learning Management Systems (LMS). I think that folks who are in the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) space have a much better idea of what will come next. In fact, many of us have all created our own Personal Learning Environment by cobbling together using a variety of tools (RSS Reader, Bookmarking, Social Networking, Desktop Search, Web Search, Personal Learning Blog, To Do Lists).

Using SharePoint

Tony Karrer

The reality is that what we did on the Work Literacy course or what I did for my Collaborative Learning Course could easily be supported by the various types of web parts within SharePoint. Using SharePoint for Work Team or Communities of Practice (CoP) Collaboration Outside of any particular formal learning, many training organizations are using SharePoint to support work teams. Some used it to track bugs. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint.
