I've run across a few different posts talking about Personal Work and Learning Environments which I have tentatively started to call PWLE - pronounced p-whale. The reason why I think it's worth us talking about tools and maps and basically what is your PWLE (p-whale) is that it's helpful for us to figure out how to support our own personal work and learning. This is talked about a bit in Personal and Group Learning Using Web 2.0

PWLE Not PLE - Knowledge Work Not Separate from Learning

Flexibility and extensibility Web browser platform Aggregation/Mashups Ease of use Several thoughts jumped out at me: The concept of a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) exists, but actual PLEs only exist as theoretical combinations of skills, methods and tools. The concept of a Personal Learning Environment Framework gets it even farther from some actual system. Luckily all of the requirements that Mohamed cites apply equally well to a PWLE.

PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. The enterprise provides tools to employees that they can use as part of the PWLE. Learning is certainly very individual, does that mean we should help people learn how to learn?

While Six Sigma was invented as a way to improve quality, its main value to corporations now clearly is its ability to save time and money. 3M was systematized in ways that were unheard of and downright heretical, even though the guidelines would have looked familiar at many other conglomerates.

Using SharePoint

The reality is that what we did on the Work Literacy course or what I did for my Collaborative Learning Course could easily be supported by the various types of web parts within SharePoint. Using SharePoint for Work Team or Communities of Practice (CoP) Collaboration Outside of any particular formal learning, many training organizations are using SharePoint to support work teams. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint.

Stephen Downes commented on my recent post - Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and said - I am opposed to the trend coming from the corporate learning side of the house to treat PLEs as work tools. What is it about people in corporate learning that they feel the need to perpetuate the attitude of servitude it seems all learners must adopt.

Corporations can "personalize" a Professional Learning Environment (aka an LMS), allowing users to add their own widgets; they can allow trainers to update a users training record; they can let the user set preferences. But that does not equal a Personal Learning Environment. Thats just a personalized Professional Learning Environment.
