Academia is teeming with learning theories. It can be quite a challenge for the modern learning professional to identify an appropriate learning theory, draw practical ideas from it, and apply it to their daily work. Which theory do you choose? How does it relate to other theories? To clear some of the obfuscation that surrounds learning theory, I have developed the following Taxonomy of Learning Theories.

Over the last few days I’ve been working through Stephen Downes’ paper Learning Networks and Connective Knowledge. Think multimedia learning, Clark & Mayer’s “ELearning and the Science of Instruction.&# ) But their methods could (at least sometimes) be right even if their explanation of the underlying mechanism is wrong. We may contrast cognitivism, which is a causal theory of mind, with connectionism, which is an emergentist theory of mind.

“Digital Mindset”: What Is It All About?

“Digital mindset” seems to have become another buzzword–rather buzz-phrase to be grammatically precise–whenever the conversation (online or offline) veers toward social business, social learning, collaboration, and other 21st Century phenomenon in general. One of the oft-repeated reasons for the failure of Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs) in organizations is often attributed to a lack of “digital mindset” in the employees or leadership or both.

So after several hours of unenlightened googling, I decided to bite the bullet, go back to first principles and read George Siemens’ seminal paper, Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age. I don’t talk much about training or learning any more. You can train people but they may or may not learn. Learning is better than training, but learning is not enough to make sure the job gets done. Moreover, people often fail to put what they learn into practice. It may or may not involve learning. It’s about cultivating a healthy learning ecology. Work and learning are two sides of the same coin. Higher ground.
