“Teaching does not cause learning.” ~ Etienne Wenger

School’s out and we have a long holiday weekend here in the U.S. I’m excited to head off towards the beach later today. We’ll stop in the mountains to visit some friends and explore a little along the way. No matter where you’re heading or if you’re hanging close to home I hope you have a fabulous weekend.

Classroom training and E-Learning are the least valued ways of learning.

Jane Hart’s (@c4lpt) survey shows that e-learning and classroom training are among the least valued ways of learning. The top of the list consists of daily work experiences (ie doing the day job) and Knowledge sharing within your team top the list, with Manager feedback and guidance not far below. How does this align with the work you do and how well do you think you are aligned with this data?

The survey is still open so hop over and add your two cents.

How Well Do We Learn From Experiential Or Inquiry Learning Approaches?

Read this to learn what Patti Shank (@PattiShank) has to share about the best way to learn. Do workers learn best from experiences such as case studies, simulations, or scenarios? Or do they learn best from the presentation of content with practice activities? What is the best way to teach people to handle workplace hazardous materials incidents, for instruction?

Using Subtle Animations & Transitions

Animations and slide transitions are something that fall into the “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” category. However, when used well they can bring focus to the right things and add a degree of polish that can make your designs feel a bit more polished and professional. This post is my contribution to this week’s Elearning Weekly Challenge and includes a couple of free PowerPoint templates.

Design Resources

  • Findshot – Yet another great looking resource for free stock photos
  • Arby’s Sauce Font – If you’re looking for a new font, how can you resist “the ink of the sandwich world”? (Yes, it is real.)

Apps I’m trying out this week:

  • Library Extension – I can’t tell you how often I find a book online and go look to see if it is in our local library. This handy browser add-in automatically searches your public library as you browse book sites like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.

What I’m listening too

  • We’ll be driving today so I’m gonna fire up the Ultimate Pop-Rock Road trip and mix in some of my favorite podcasts.

Thanks for reading! If you found anything good, forward it to a friend or spread the word with a tweet. 😎
