Seven Ways to Use the iPad for Workplace Learning

Upside Learning

Lotus or MS Exchange? Can I run more than one program? The iPad is here. After all the hype, which it didn’t quite live up to, there was a lot of commentary web-wide on whether it’s suitable for elearning, or a specific type of learning. Here at Upside our camp is divided, there are iPad lovers and there are iPad baiters.

How to Identify Truly Exceptional Talent

CLO Magazine

Unfortunately, most succession planning tools such as the nine box fail to differentiate the “A+” from the “A” or “B” player, and our learning programs assume wrongly that the truly brilliant should be singularly educated on leadership techniques versus technical, market or entrepreneurial skills. Ozzie moved from Data General, to IBM/Lotus to Microsoft to the startup Talko — each time for a bigger challenge.

IBM also is looking at solutions to manage scheduling for the next version of Lotus Workplace, part of IBM's collection of software that rivals Office. But I don't think the scheduling tools that Microsoft and Lotus are building are it. A recent CNET article noted that the typical office worker is interrupted every three minutes by an e-mail, IM, phone call, etc. If you are working on something creative, it takes about 8 minutes for our brains to get into that state.

Online Learning in Education

Popular ones included Lotus Notes, Blackboard and WebCT. 75% of institutions report that the economic downturn has increased the demand of online programs/courses (Sloan Consortium – survey based on 2,500 institutions). By 2015, Marketdata predicts that 37% of all post-secondary enrollments will be in online programs. Especially, when we are talking about online programs and courses. In 1993, Jones International made its debut on the internet.

Do they know how to use the e-mail program you are using, assuming it is either Gmail or Outlook? If it is like Lotus 1-2-3, forget it – no one is using that unless they are still using floppy discs at your workplace. That said, if you are using Salesforce, do not expect someone to know that program, unless they worked at a company that had it. Office is another matter (or if they use Mac, whatever is the office program there, besides Microsoft which is available).

In Lotus Notes and Outlook you can track the email, to verify they opened it and it got there. Better yet, there are programs out there that will hide the tracking, so the moment someone opens it you know. The plug-ins are available in every type of email program out there, including Outlook.

The latest edition of Personal Computer World (PCW) magazine includes an interesting review of the key events and changes that have occurred in the thirty years since its first publication. Here's a quick summary of what PCW has reported over this period (bear in mind that PCW is a UK magazine and its focus is heavily PC): 1978: Launch of Commodore Pet, with 9" monitor and 16K RAM.

By contrast, instructional designers are accustomed to building new programs from the ground up, like architects who begin by chopping down trees and leveling contours so they can plan from a blank sheet of paper. If an organization is committed to Microsoft Sharepoint, IBM Lotus, Salesforce, SAP, or another proprietary solution for in-house communication and project management, the workscape designer tweaks that platform for optimal learning rather than trying to replace it.
