Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) do exactly what they say on the can - they are personal to each individual, created by them, owned by them, used by them within their lifelong learning. Essentially, we argue that students require structure and scaffolding when they first venture into digital learning environments.

I have always believed in a hybrid solution and indeed use one in my own professional practice, but for the sake of the polemic momentum, I'm advocating that institutions seriously reappraise their use of the VLE (read 'managed learning environment').

I have managed many meaningful conversations with students about their work through this method, both during lessons and also post-lecture, but it''s clearly not for everyone. However, bear in mind that most VLEs have online discussion threads that all of the group can see and read.

I think that Managed Learning Environments are like Pompeii. Secondly, the new generation of social networking students don't want or need to be managed. They are doomed, because firstly, everything that you pay to do on an MLE can be done outside, on the web, for free.

I am against the sterile, meaningless Managed Learning Environments (read BlackBoard, SharePoint and yes, even Moodle) that universities and colleges push which are purpose built to maintain strict control. They constrain the use of materials, and ensure that only bona fide students are allowed in.
