Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. There is a wide assumption that if a product sells a lot it means that it is better than anyone else. Think about it.

Then there are LXPs, again some bolting from the name, and most adding more and more LMS functionality, Learning Platform is another. A Learning Platform is often an LMS streamlined down, but they won’t refer to themselves as an LMS. SumTotal for example did a nice revamp, but their reporting is super outdated.

I see it as a platform that could easily be for 1,500 and up users, although it may sit better at 5,000+. I wish they included e-mail marketing (they do via MailChimp), and some other sales components to aid those folks who are seeking systems in this space. New entrants are coming into the market. . The downside to this approach, is trying to have B2B/B2C (aka extended enterprise) market, which they all want. .

What has been applying is the term mobile learning and how it it pitched to consumers in the e-learning sector, especially with LMS/LCMS/Learning platform vendors. Mobile learning is not just seeing the LMS (or LCMS or platform) via a mobile browser. The product offers a nice set of modules, but alas, only the two above are free.
