The vendors were competing for two unique, extended enterprise LMS opportunities. Selling LMSs is very tough in 2016 because of the plenitude and parity of vendor options. The average five-year vendor bid for all licenses and services was $725K. One vendor even sent a handwritten follow-up thank you note via snail mail.

Before diving into our semi-annual, readers question and answer, I’d like to talk about a subject near and dear to me – acquisitions. In the past few months, many of you probably have noticed a slight uptick in to the number of vendors who have been acquired either by another vendor in the market, or outside of the e-learning space or even a Private Equity firm. Some vendors will be flexible with you, and allow you to leave if you so desire, others less so.

What is an LXP and why do I want one?

These two vendors are EdCast and Degreed. Are they the best ones in the market? Getting back to being unaware, I find the same issue with a few vendors in the learning system space who are really LXPs, but have no idea. Yet, I have been in polite discussions with the head of sales at one system, and the CEO of another who adamantly told me they are not an LXP. In fact, it is only in a couple compared to the entire market.

Everything from which one should I pick, to what do I think of X or Y to whether or not, they should have use a RFP. Sure, you have it customized (to a degree) of what you need – skin it, add children or sub portals, use e-commerce, and blah blah, but at the end of that contract, it either goes back to the vendor (in a sense) or you renew. Yes, but it is a challenge, because there is only a handful of vendors, who will actually sell you outright their system.

It should be noted that for many of these HCMs, learning is the driver and the one that sales the most, compared to all the other modules if someone was to buy just one module. I mention this because there are vendors who continue to push towards adding performance management functionality to their learning system, with many people assuming these vendors to be, LMS vendors when it just isn’t universally true. The market continues to grow at a very strong pace.
