APIs and Mashups r ur new ABCs for E-Learning

An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Open Architecture. APIs are open source code, so that developers (inc. Google code is open source code, so you can manipulate. Mashups. Search for restaurants in Google and Google Maps shows up with the various restaurants on the map.

A few systems pitch that they have full mobile learning capability, especially with the iPad including the angle that you can see it full screen rather than the standard universal look – which shows up similar to the smartphone look – i.e. small. It shows up in your browser. Click on the app and your default browser opens and off you go. As I often say to folks, what is the point of having an app, if all it does is open up my browser.

I want to make something very clear – Moodle and other open source LMSs, Learning Portals, CMSs, etc. You can either have all open, which many companies do not want, or are stuck with course keys and other additional non-necessary steps. APIs and mashups – which is really can expand Moodle to the next level of learning. Moodle and some other open source LMS/LCMS solutions are not really “out of the box” solutions.

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Illogical – I often see systems that add features that seem as though they tossed a bunch of ideas on a wall and whatever stuck up there, went into their platform. True, people are selecting open source systems, and for the majority of them, it is Moodle. The LMS market is strong.

Even with the advent of user-friendly HTML editors, you still required some IT support and guidance to get something up on a web site that worked and looked half-decent. Sure, there are open source learning management systems such as Moodle and The Sakai Project that bring the cost barrier down.
