APIs and Mashups r ur new ABCs for E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. Mashups. LMS Vendors.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. By the mid to late 2000′s, the split returned with LCMS and LMS (and yes, there were vendors who called themselves LCMSs for as long as e-learning – online learning – has existed). rather then going through the LMS vendor.

Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Apparently, the potential customers and even clients are speaking and those vendors are listening. Not just a few vendors, the industry as a whole. A significant number of vendors, reported higher revenue and sales numbers in 2010, then in 2009. A number of vendors whose real focus is the Talent Management/Performance Management market.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that.

Latest LMS Trends – The Truth is No Longer a Stranger

In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. and not necessarily worldwide (which should be the case), there is bound to be those vendors who are seeking new opportunities. What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. Vendors such as Edmodo, enables teachers at various schools across the world to communicate with each other. Now before you argue about “security&# or “privacy&# , you can create (even now using mashups or some APIs) the ability to lock down or block certain areas. A vendor who sees real value in this approach, can create an interface so that if a company or business, choose to do so, they could “connect&# with another LMS client, who has the same interface.

Social Learning and LMSs Marketplace

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. In any other market, the goal is to be number one, yet for whatever reason, in this market when it comes to social learning, there are a significant number of vendors, who would rather just sit on the sidelines. Time for these vendors to wake up, or see your audience share disappear.

With the ability to easily create learning applications that seamlessly mash-up the best content, and with the tools available, it is no wonder that some innovative vendors have already seized on this new opportunity. The core to this concept is having a repository of granular learning assets aligned to the standards from which a teacher can mash-up and select from, to individualize the instruction.

API integration – yep, either the vendor has open APIs or they can accept any API – and have it work with their system (usually a fee, but that is besides the point). Point Solutions vs. Suites and Composition

I think its pretty safe to assume that the big corporate LMS vendors will jump on this bandwagon soon enough by adding a workflow tool into their systems to finally be able to support richer specifications of blended learning programs. says "create lots of easily composable, point solutions that can be mashed together." Just some thoughts that puzzle me on why some LMS/LCMS vendors (okay over 98% of them) are still in some time warp from the Eighties when it comes time to enhance their services and technological solutions. So why do vendors refuse to do this? That said, I should be able, or my administrator should be able to call your tech support or customer service, depending on the issue (tech or non-tech) and get an answer – otherwise, why should you as the vendor have those staffs?
