Leadership does not want to hear about Kirkpatrick , Mager , Bloom’s , Maslow , Gagne , or other learning processes or methodology. But that’s good too, use that information to take an opportunity to rethink your methods and overall department strategy. Then we need to keep our teams focused on the validated skill or knowledge gaps and bring sound adult learning methods to bear. The phrase, “If your only tool is a hammer then every problem looks like a nail” is loosely attributed to Abraham Maslow ( [link] ). The conversation erupted on social media, as it has before, about the state of affairs in the field of Learning and Development, or L&D.

Emergence of the Performance Catalyst

As I have previously argued, I believe summative assessment methods are only useful to mark an end to a specific period of learning, a gateway into the next stage of the learning journey (and I''m not convinced we should even be doing this in many cases). In my teaching I have therefore focused on assessment as a means of scaffolding student progress , and I employ a variety of methods to achieve this end. One recent assessment method I have used is to get students to make videos.

Even with the recent human rights, civil rights and social justice movements, globally exposing an obvious clue that D&I efforts have failed, companies seem resolved in sticking with the same old ineffective methods.

It’s a bit of a “Maslow Hierarchy” of learning and knowledge transfer methods for application users. The number of tool/technology providers that get involved with these methods is extensive. It’s been over 25 years since Gloria Gery, Barry Raybould and others defined the concept of Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS). Their broad vision was compelling but, at the time, there was no realistic technology to enable that vision.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is only popular, because triangles are easy to put into Powerpoint slides" he opined.
