While I’ve covered audio recording tips and tricks in the past, one of the most frequent questions I’m still asked is about microphones. Sometimes if I can’t get rid of the noise, I will play some music softly in the background–not Eminem, but something a little softer.

Turn off in-game music. If you’re recording a game that has both background music and sound effects you should turn off music within the game settings. Because if you edit the video later, the music will sound like it’s jumping. Use music.

Inexpensive wireless microphone. I also endeavor to use some aesthetic sensibilities; developed over the years regarding audio, music, visuals, cinematography, etc. based on who knows what (going to art museums, listening to music, playing music as a kid, observing the craft while watching videos, movies, TV, etc.). For years I've been telling clients they ought to use more video in their learning programs, especially their elearning offerings.

Frequency smoothing: The default setting is setting is 3, settings lower than this tend to favor music and higher settings tend to favor spoken word. Audacity is great for cleaning up audio for a podcast or music. Recording clean audio can be tough, especially in noisy environments.

I wrote a script, recorded my computer screen, and was very easily able to edit those together in Camtasia and then add a dash of music. Tim : I find the perfect combination for me to create videos is the iPhone or an inexpensive HD camera, a good microphone and Camtasia.

Record the best audio you can by using a good microphone. You can get a decent microphone for less than $100. Here’s an example of two different microphones on the same laptop in the same room: $30 headset and $72 desktop (with no pop filter or any other type of adjustment).
