The evolution of personal learning environments

Origin Learning

A personal learning environment refers to the tools, technologies, resources etc. that a person uses at the individual level to build on his knowledge base. By and large, this constitutes John’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE). The coming of technology has naturally exposed us to more entertainment, and at the same time, to more learning. Much of our learning is informal and happens online.

PLE bargaining

Those attending the PLE Conference found themselves quickly immersed in discussion, dialogue and debate over the nature and ethos of the personal learning environment. The Twitter stream alone went wild, and by midday on the second day there had been over 5000 messages inserted into the #PLE-BCN hashtag stream. Assessment and accreditation of learning were discussed, as was the curriculum. Image source Posted by Steve Wheeler from Learning with e's.

Personal Learning Resources

Learning with e's

Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are made up of more than web tools. My Personal Learning Network is essentially the people I connect with in order to learn what I need when I need it. But as I have tried to articulate in earlier blogposts , my PLE is more than people and tools. It is said that you can tell a lot about a person by looking at the books they have on their shelves. The Importance of Personalized Learning – Part 1 of 3 – K12

Xyleme

Over the next weeks, I will be writing about personalized learning and how that applies to different learning populations. At first I’ll address K12 learning, then I’ll address how personalization affects a high-skill knowledge workforce, and a service workforce. Is K12 ready for Personalized Learning? What does it take to reinvent our learning systems to give our kids the education they need to compete in the 2020 market?

Why It's Time to Dump Your LMS for a PLE [Infographic]

Lemonade

In addition to less than inspiring visuals, most LMSs don’t offer individualized learning paths. Instead they push users through a rigid, one-size-fits-all course structure — hardly an optimal experience in the age of hyper personalization. And if all that wasn't bad enough, many LMSs also aren't accessible on mobile devices, which just doesn’t make sense for a modern workforce. Delivering training via mobile is a no-brainer.

Everyone has one

Learning with 'e's

Everyone has one - a personal learning environment, that is. Just look around when you are next sat on a bus or train, and you will see people sat listening with earbuds or using their mobile phones. We all learn. We all use tools to help us learn. Personal learning environments or PLEs, are the collection of tools (not just online) that enable us to connect, create and share content with our own communities of interest and practice.

I attended an event in Utrecht, in the Netherlands way back in 2007, at around the time that social media was emerging as a serious learning technology. Together for two days, we discussed how digital technologies and networks could support learning. The event was called 'Show that you Share' and focused on tools such as Creative Commons , personal learning environments and mobile phones as a means of creating, sharing and repurposing content, knowledge and artefacts for education.

Today, after the rapid evolution of the LMS – hastened by several factors, right from the inclusion of social learning tools, to an ever increasing need for usability – many things have changed, and still continue to change, in the LMS. Noughties. but nice

Learning with e's

The first decade of the 21st Century was highly significant for personal learning. Such a vast array of new personal devices and web applications was introduced that have become so deeply ingrained in our everyday lives, many of us would probably feel at a loss if we were suddenly transported back to 1999. If we time jumped from then to 2009, the way we now communicate, learn, search for information, share content and consume entertainment would be unrecognisable.

Rhizomatic approaches to learning fall into this kind of philosophy.

Blurring the boundaries

I'm increasingly conscious of the blurring of boundaries between formal and informal learning contexts. We spend much of our time in formal settings such as classrooms, training rooms and 'on the job' training, to learn the stuff that gets accredited through academic or vocational qualifications bodies.
