I recently created a photo slideshow (using PowerPoint) of my dad’s life-sized chess set sculpture that’s at Facebook (Go Dad!). Below is what I learned, as well as some bonus lessons such as adding music, creating a custom title slide, saving the slideshow as YouTube video, and more. I also included some free downloads that you can use in your own slideshows, such as the stock music I used, as well as some templates to help you with your own slideshows. Add music.

Legends in their own lunchtime

When I attended AFCENT international school in the Netherlands, I would often find myself in the music room, listening to friends and staff playing impromptu concerts. It was great to sit cross-legged on the carpet, eating your sandwiches, chatting to friends and listening to live music. This series of jam sessions in the music room turned me on to the power of music, but also inspired me to create my own instruments.

As he waits for the music to start, he toys with a snow globe - a piece of trivia which holds his attention briefly. Then the music starts. and he begins to weep as the music washes over him. And yet, the music it produced was able to reduce a man to tears. Music has the power to reach deep down into our very souls and does so because it bypasses our intellect and aims directly for our hearts, our emotions.

Some time ago, I was cast as a chorus member in a musical. I could sing and read music, but I didn’t have any experience dancing. Use line drawings instead of photos for directions and diagrams, this makes it easier to focus on the essentials. I wasn’t the only person with a background in music. So we had to grin and bear it every time the music director slowed down to explain where we were or what the symbols on the page meant.

First Steps on My Instructional Design Journey

Experiencing eLearning

It was January of my first year teaching K-12 music and band. We taught parallel sections of a music appreciation course, but we needed to write the content ourselves. I loved the opportunity to stretch the band students with some music theory and history, but wasn’t quite sure how I’d manage with no textbooks, no curriculum materials, and no budget. The choir teacher also taught a section of music appreciation, so at least I had someone to collaborate with.
