There are two types of audio file in Figure 3: a stereo file which is typically used for music, and a mono file, which we use for narration. There is little point recording voice-overs in stereo – you only have one voice (or audio source), after all. If you record a voice-over in stereo, you only double the file size, for no gain in quality.

We used this consistently across the USB microphones, despite the best practice of adjusting the level to your voice and needs. For our tests, we wanted to capture the difference between male and female voices. Overall, some mics did perform better for a male voice, and some for a female voice. Do note, that with some post-processing, or by adjusting your equalization on your mixing board you can optimize any of these mics for any voice type.
