When I started using Twitter for my professional growth and development, I didn’t realize that I was also starting to build my personal learning network. I simply found myself tweeting at a learning and development conference using its hashtag and others began connecting with me. I hadn’t yet recognized the value of connectedness , but knew immediately that I was learning from each of these encounters. A network, by definition, is quite different.

Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona. The state education system can easily be compared to a railway network. There is no deviation from the track (unless there is a disaster and there is a derailment - trains run on the rails), and generally there is a prescribed timetable that dictates the schedule of arrivals and departures of all trains in the network. Some prefer to travel in a taxi, or even by using their own personal transport. In other words, they need technologies that are networked.

Donald Clark left the following comment on my posting about personal learning environments: "The term PLE is, in itself, suspect. Learning - well no, it's more about a two-way, working window - learning is at best a small part of it, a by product, not it's sole purpose. Environment - the PLE isn't the environment, the internet is." The Internet tool that Donald describes and the knowledge network that I describe above do overlap.

The first decade of the 21st Century was highly significant for personal learning. Such a vast array of new personal devices and web applications was introduced that have become so deeply ingrained in our everyday lives, many of us would probably feel at a loss if we were suddenly transported back to 1999. If we time jumped from then to 2009, the way we now communicate, learn, search for information, share content and consume entertainment would be unrecognisable.

The institutional network locked me out. Eventually, bless 'em, they logged me into a specialised system - known as the access grid - which was open with no networking restrictions. It's a movement against the commoditization of learning and against corporate profiteering. VLEs are generally difficult to use, with far too much effort needed to be put into understanding how the system works, to the detriment of the time and effort spent actually learning.
