Microlearning through open educational resources (OERs) is one of the facets of learning that is fast gaining traction among people. The focus of this system is to deliver customized OERs as microlearning nuggets to satisfy the real-time needs of learners. The OER, on the other hand, refers to the course material that the learner is permitted to edit, reuse, revise and redistribute without having to pay a royalty fee to the author.

MOOCs on various topics can be set up using blended content – some custom designed and some re-purposed from OERs and other available content from the net as long as one takes care to note the various IPR-related policies.

When students started migrating towards used textbooks, rentals, MOOCs and OER due to the high prices of printed textbooks, it affected the revenues of traditional book publishers. And it has also launched OpenNow, its own OER with courses starting at $30 per course and is accessible within a Cengage Unlimited subscription.
