Cornerstone OnDemand Inc. announces acquisition of Saba in $1.395 billion deal

Cornerstone OnDemand Inc. Over the next year, Cornerstone, a human capital management software provider, plans to incorporate Saba’s product portfolio into its own, extending the company’s reach from 40 million users to 75 million, according to a news release from Cornerstone.

When I talk about a LMS, I am saying specifically a learning management system and the vendors themselves should see their own product first and foremost as a LMS, not as a TM/PM or whatever. There is a wide assumption that if a product sells a lot it means that it is better than anyone else. Yet if you look at the marketplace of any consumer product you will see that is not always the case. From a general product standpoint, go take a look at Amazon.com or Consumer Reports.

I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). Cornerstone OnDemand – The whole separate Salesforce solution makes little sense to me, considering the number of vendors who have API or used Salesforce Canvas in their systems and thus it is a part of it. Cornerstone OnDemand. Q: We use Cornerstone OnDemand for our LMS and have to ask – where do you see them today? However, the people I have spoken with at CoD tell me that Learning Cloud (the LMS) is their biggest seller in their product line. If the financial numbers quarterly are so strong, then why is the product, Learning Cloud, lagging in some areas versus others (in comparison with the LMS space on average)?

Between the two systems, I am leaning more towards LMS365, just because I honestly believe it has a future in the SharePoint space much more so than their other product (nothing against it, but…). If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down.

With its m-learning capability including on/off synch and rather solid UI, the product continues to be an effective solution. While the pricing is outrageous and the Saba as a whole seems better suited as a HCM, their learning suite is a better alternative than those who want Cornerstone OnDemand. Feature wise the product is impressive. The product is always cutting edge and their mobile is outstanding. Despite some sales hiccups, this is a wonderful product.

Resellers who are part of your business learning network – maybe you provide them courses on how to sell your product. I give it an edge over Cornerstone OnDemand, who still has major UI challenges to solve among some other items, and while their e-commerce is extremely extensive, if it and the admin side for that matter overwhelms you, then not even a great e-commerce will work. I admit I love lists.
