The meta-program

Clark Quinn

A couple of weeks ago, I posited what I thought might make the basis for a sustainable degree program. So, using an application -based pedagogy , there are a series of activities that require application, but they vary in type: research, design, problem-solve, interact, and in output.

Using MOOCs in Corporate Training Programs

Your Training Edge

Companies also have several options for how to integrate MOOCs into their training programs. Many organizations offer prepackaged MOOCs, and this is a very good option for workplace skills, professional development, and other parts of a training program that don’t require company-specific content. The Saylor Foundation offers a Workplace Skills Program that includes courses in computer literacy, professional writing, and time and stress management.

I find it interesting that these folks are so willing to use the term certification to describe their program. In the late 1990s I was working with a colleague at University of Virginia to develop an online education program to prepare online teachers. It was clearly not a certification program because, at the time, there were no online teaching certifications for any states.

Connectivism Blog > Pedagogy First? tags: connectivism , context , pedagogy , technology. George Siemens argues that rather than starting with pedagogy for making instructional decisions, we should start with context. He recommends choosing the technology first, then the pedagogy to match, partly because “sound pedagogy&# is an ambiguous target. Pedagogy should not even be a consideration during the planning stages of technology use.

Disrupting Education

Clark Quinn

Some thoughts I lobbed in another forum (lightly edited): Mark Warschauer, in his great book Learning in the Cloud (which has nothing to do with ‘the cloud’), pointed out that there are only 3 things wrong with public education: the curricula, the pedagogy, and the way they use tech; other than that they’re fine. For example, just because you learn to do AI programming doesn’t mean you’re ready to be an AI programmer.

Knowledge is created, not communicated

The eLearning Nomad

It refers to the paradigm shift first proposed by Paulo Freire ( Pedagogy of the Oppressed ) in 1968. He said that traditional pedagogy treats people like empty vessels to be filled with knowledge (the “banking” approach to education) and he called for an approach that treats the learner as a co-creator of knowledge. This is a considerable problem because it means not much is achieved with most e-learning programs. I love this phrase.

Instructivism, constructivism or connectivism?

E-Learning Provocateur

The popular sequence of events that I have recounted is often represented pictorially as a gradient, accompanied by that ubiquitous table comparing various aspects of the three pedagogies. Sure, the gradient reflects a wonderful growth of ideas, but I think it’s a trap to conclude that the latter pedagogies supersede the former. All three pedagogies build on one another to provide a rounded theoretical toolset for the modern professional to exploit.

How to Incorporate Self-Directed Learning in Your Online Course

Overbearing pedagogy is a recurring problem for many adult learners. Even if they’re taking it as part of a work program, they may have signed up to meet a career goal. Self-direction is one of the key attributes of an adult learner. How can you encourage it in your online course? As children, we’re usually taught in a way that emphasizes a “follow the teacher” mentality. The instructor lays out the lesson, delivers a lecture, sets homework, and marks grades.
