Effective Distance Learning Pedagogy In Developing Countries

eLearning Industry

In some developing countries, distance learning is in the same classification as self-study programs, where content serves as didactic material for learners to study on their own by sifting through a considerable amount of content material without needing critical academic guidance by instructors.

The meta-program

Clark Quinn

A couple of weeks ago, I posited what I thought might make the basis for a sustainable degree program. So, using an application -based pedagogy , there are a series of activities that require application, but they vary in type: research, design, problem-solve, interact, and in output. How well did you communicate your learnings from that experiment on recursion in learning programs? Curriculum and the pedagogy can be refined, and in fact are interleaved.

Companies also have several options for how to integrate MOOCs into their training programs. Many organizations offer prepackaged MOOCs, and this is a very good option for workplace skills, professional development, and other parts of a training program that don’t require company-specific content. The Saylor Foundation offers a Workplace Skills Program that includes courses in computer literacy, professional writing, and time and stress management.

Three areas of concern and ultimately, intersection emerged: the pedagogy (teaching practice), the methodology (curriculum delivery) and technology (what is possible in the two-dimensional world?).

I find it interesting that these folks are so willing to use the term certification to describe their program. In the late 1990s I was working with a colleague at University of Virginia to develop an online education program to prepare online teachers. It was clearly not a certification program because, at the time, there were no online teaching certifications for any states.

At Learnkit, we’ve helped a number of our clients transition to a flipped (also known as blended learning ) model for their employee training programs. Providing time to practice the concepts they’ve learned online and apply their learning increases the learning results of training programs. . Our Learncycle pedagogy improves learner engagement, retention, and application of knowledge by deploying lessons through a series of short, bite-sized pieces.

How complex is learning?

Learning with 'e's

We flounder and stumble as we try to navigate a plethora of educational theories and we become bogged down in prescribed institutional pedagogies, providing no more than glimpses of true education for our students. Even if you could program a computer to break rules and mimic (or model) these traits, it would still be following rules and would not be able to deviate from them. Learning is highly complex.

March of the robots

Learning with 'e's

A few of the robots I saw were potentially useful tools to promote interesting and engaging pedagogy, but some seemed to do nothing more than follow a black line around in circles. Students design and build similar robots from kits, investing creativity into their designs, and then they program them to perform a variety of tasks that are mapped against the curriculum. I just wish we were able to build and program robots when I was in school.

#40years of educational technology: Computers

Learning with 'e's

Pedagogy and technology are in a symbiotic relationship, and I have been privileged to witness its development first hand over the last 40 years. I learnt a lot from meeting with these groups and tried out some new ideas, including learning how to program. I placed a BBC Acorn computer outside my office with some learning software on it, and connected up a dot matrix printer, which logged each time a student used a program, their scores and how long they took to complete it.

The students were only given 90 minutes to create, program and test their robots, and quickly discovered that time was also an issue.

Disrupting Education

Clark Quinn

Some thoughts I lobbed in another forum (lightly edited): Mark Warschauer, in his great book Learning in the Cloud (which has nothing to do with ‘the cloud’), pointed out that there are only 3 things wrong with public education: the curricula, the pedagogy, and the way they use tech; other than that they’re fine. For example, just because you learn to do AI programming doesn’t mean you’re ready to be an AI programmer.

Online training in empathic mode

Among its approaches, the pedagogy of empathy is one that can be implemented even in simplified elearning solutions. An empathic pedagogy has been shown to benefit feelings of trust, enjoyment of study, motivation and engagement in learning, the development and strengthening of a bond between teacher and learners, the creation of a positive learning environment, the development of a sense of belonging to the group, the valuing of learning, and educational success.

Knowledge is created, not communicated

The eLearning Nomad

It refers to the paradigm shift first proposed by Paulo Freire ( Pedagogy of the Oppressed ) in 1968. He said that traditional pedagogy treats people like empty vessels to be filled with knowledge (the “banking” approach to education) and he called for an approach that treats the learner as a co-creator of knowledge. This is a considerable problem because it means not much is achieved with most e-learning programs. I love this phrase.
