Use of PowerPoint in rapid content authoring tools – this has been a big irritant of mine, since the days when PPT first made its appearance in rapid content authoring tools. Some vendors use chapter-page approach with PPT, but there are plenty who do not (why?). Even with just content only – like PPT or video files.

I mean it is not like something is going to change in just a few weeks for any such product. Innovation – if the product doesn’t offer some innovative features, then they are stale. Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. Here are my criteria.

Assessment/Survey/Polls – If your product doesn’t have it – you need it. I hope it does – especially with SaaS products. PowerPoint – Ability to integrate or use PPT in your courses. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash.

If I am an authoring tool vendor, I would explore what is happening in the authoring tool market, what my product looks like, how I can make it better for my target audience and what do I see or others I trust see the e-learning space is heading. . is overwhelming, unless they have used a product in the past like Photoshop that uses layers.

Objects, Triggers, Conditions, Layers and more – For authoring folks who either have the skill set, or have hit the top of their product and want to push forward – more authoring tools are embracing those feature sets. This does not mean that you will get content versioning with it. It’s everywhere and anywhere.

While the assumption would be that all the products are alike, or that fee based tools are superior to their free counterparts, nothing could be farther than the truth. Macromedia Authorware and similar products. So nobody can see their product. Macromedia Director. HTML and Javascript. That was pretty much it.
