Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

eLearning 24-7

What about PENS or some other compliance standard? Unless you must have PENS or one of the other compliance standards, it is not needed. PENS was created by AICC as an alternative to SCORM 2004, 3rd edition. . Vendors who have partnerships with WebEx or whomever they use, typically require you to purchase a license, which is separate from the system. Rather, “partner&# is a dual revenue steam for the vendor and their partner – a business relationship deal.

PENS – Why your LMS and Authoring Tool Solution should include it

eLearning 24-7

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. Before we jump into PENS, let’s begin in the authoring tool industry. PENS Time. Can you provide some insight into PENS? PENS Overview. PENS Specs.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Sure there are over 100 vendors in this industry and probably 95% you have never heard of and whom have great products that can meet or beat the big players.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. Expect a few commercial vendors to jump into the augmented reality space for e-learning. These vendors, I believe will consist of: Vendors who offer an authoring tool or game sim and will develop additional product lines tied to Augmented Reality.

eLearning 24-7

One vendor already offers it in 2012, and knowing this industry – if something takes off and works, others will follow. Right now, you have to upload the course as you would with your SCORM wrapper, where you self-upload or use the course within an online mobile platform from your authoring tool vendor. Just as you can with PENS authoring tools and the systems that support PENS (i.e

State of the Authoring Tool Industry

eLearning 24-7

Bewildered on what is happening, why what is needed isn’t appearing as it should, and how is it possible that something so obvious based on where e-learning is heading, mobile is pushing and future tech is inspiring is lost among so many vendors? Confusion leads to flushed in terms of causation that some vendors in their infinite wisdom have decided it is better to jump one way than stay the course. I know of one vendor who has a review checker and it works quite well.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. Anyway, I expect this number i.e. number of vendors to offer more than 10 interactive templates to rise. Nowadays I am seeing vendors offer 15, 17, 25 and even 30 templates.

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Congrats, you are probably looking at less than 10 (based on my LMS directory which contains 475 vendors). Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name. New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

eLearning 24-7

A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. AICC, SCORM and PENS support. I’m always amazed at some of the names vendors come up with for authoring tools. Well besides my rankings of course, think about this: 1st vendor to offer collaboration and peer review. 1st vendor to have online/offline mobile synch. 1st vendor IMO to truly have HTML5 output.

Course Authoring Tools for eLearning Developers and the masses

eLearning 24-7

SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS. The authoring tool vendors will say their products are for everyone. Or the demand from themselves, the vendors. Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Geared towards the masses. A combination of both. Authoring Tools for developers.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. One vendor focuses only on Blackberry (not just Playbook but their smartphone like product). Vendor adoption is slow.

E-Learning News and Notes

eLearning 24-7

While it is true that there are vendors who are pure online proctoring solutions, it would seem to me, that having it as part of a learning management or platform is a better route then just a self-contained OP solution. In the end, no matter what type of security you setup, if someone really wants to cheat even with a 360 web cam that the vendor provides, it can be done. Most tend to be proprietary, but I have seen a few that are SCORM/AICC and yes even PENS.

Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature. Courses appearing in the market in a linear fashion, a result of people entering the space from a ILT background, it fits under this category, because vendors are not explaining the non-linear nor the true essence of WBT of courses.

Instructional Design vs. Instructional Development: What’s the Difference?

Whether you’re working with an eLearning vendor or creating training in-house, understanding the difference between design and development helps you see the big picture. The design phase is the portion of the development cycle where the designer is putting pen to paper to create a concept.

Collaborative Learning in Spite of Organizational Walls – June #LCBQ

Dashe & Thomson

I’ve thought about this question off and on for about a week now, and it is time to put pen to paper, or rather hands to keyboard. But for the most part, they have managed to make those walls permeable so the various organizations, including vendors and customers, can learn from one another. This makes them accessible to vendors and customers who interact with the application via a web portal. How do we break down organizational walls when it comes to learning?

Some vendors have included performance reviews. The downside to this whole thing, is that some of these vendors are so focused on adding PM, they are forgetting a few items that I don’t know would seem relevant: Enhancing their administration side to make it easier, more flexible and capabilities; let’s not forget that they people who are in the system more often than learners are administrators. EMR Training: Are You HiTech?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

There are  several vendors  who create EMR software including McKesson, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, AllScripts, and Epic. When I documented something in patient charts, I used pen and paper, similar to just about everyone else in the healthcare industry. Why bash the LMS?

Clark Quinn

In response to a query about why someone would question the concept of the LMS, I penned the (slightly altered, for clarity) response that follows: What seems to me to be the need is to have a unified performer-facing environment. Everyone who can program a DB is suddenly a social media vendor. I’m not anti-LMS, or anti-LMS vendor; I’m anti-’courses are the one true learning’, and I’m afraid that leading with the LMS is a slippery slope to that place.

World of Learning Conference Review

While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. Super potential, the show has always been ILT (which is still extremely popular in the UK), but there were LMS vendors there and a couple of e-learning, m-learning tools. Heck, one vendor I know even landed a massive deal right there at the show.

Five LMS Lists

eLearning 24-7

There are three types of systems that slide under “learning platforms” The most common one supports PowerPoint, and videos and other content – and can track it, but they DO NOT support any version of SCORM, nor do they support AICC, PENS, Tin Can and so on. There are LMS vendors who offer a standalone MLMS, but also can interface it with their own system and may just pitch it as a “mobile” component. Everyone loves a good list.

Why your learning management system needs content support

LearnUpon

Many LMS vendors make bold claims about the quality of customer support they deliver. Beyond simply asking a vendor about hours and channels covered, you should assess how equipped they are to respond to the common content issues that may arise. That’s where help from an experienced team who can identify the issue and offer specific information to pass on to the authoring tool vendor can be really helpful. But those issues will vary from vendor to vendor.
