SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition (rarely used), AICC, PENS – all of which are compliance standards, each with strengths and minuses. . Then there is Tin Can aka xAPI. I like the Tin Can term better than xAPI which is very technical and anyone in marketing knows, simple is better and xAPI just sounds too technical.

The one downer to the entire system, and one I have repeatedly told them is a bad idea, is that it is only xAPI for content. The power to me is what you can do with videos, but if you have content built in any 3rd party authoring tool that accepts all the course standards including xAPI. No other course standards are accepted. #6

Lots of pens. To pick either a pen or stylus (I surmise people took both). The offering is essentially Tin Can (xAPI), but also includes a Learning Record Store and a personal data locker (place to put your data record for security/privacy). Then again, last year there were ZERO days. So this is an improvement.

Tin Can/xAPI - A year ago, it wasn’t universal. PENS – This compliance standard has been around for 8+ years, but several vendors are offering it as a capability. Ability to create users/user groups, send a link for users to take a course. Now it is a must have. BTW, gaming is not the same as gamification.

Course standards are course standards, and yes, you have the option to select CMI-5 and xAPI. xAPI as my top three. PENS is nearly non-existent in this segment and CMI-5 is extremely new and few vendors have it – expect more in 2019.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. Other issues can be generated by the dependence of SCORM and xAPI course content on Flash technology, which might not be supported by every browser. The range of browsers and versions of browsers used are often a culprit. Some browser plugins may prevent a course from communicating completion statuses back to the LMS.

Only a few support PENS, which is a shame, because it really does some very cool things. xAPI support – Hit the gas this is flying fast. How about adding an xAPI checker or something along those lines? Output to HTML5. At least SCORM support – Plenty still support AICC. 2004 (3rd edition) included. Assessment tool.

Many of the tools support all , or nearly all (excluding PENS). Plus you publish right into the learning system you are using, as long as the tool supports the learning system course standards. But check. I also added the authoring tool, I consider the best in the market. Easy to use. But it is complex, and you have a learning curve.

If you are seeking PENS, LMS. xAPI – It’s LMS, but it is razor close. I was actually surprised at the number of learning platforms who either had ZERO course standards. That said, it is a tie. 2004 – tie.
