Today BlackBoard announced plans to merge with WebCT; the two leading providers in the higher education eLearning space (BlackBoard alone forecasts US$150M+ for their fiscal year). It also doesn't bode well for WebCT's willingness to play with open source (sorry Harold!)

I personally think what has hurt them in the greater market is the push by so many vendors (some of which are legit competitors) to refer to them as “traditional”, citing how long they have been around. WebCT was a direct competitor back then, but BB was far better. Never to be underestimated.
